Sibrows Posted August 29, 2017 Posted August 29, 2017 I'm currently looking at implementing UniFi APs at one of our schools and I've discovered that the Captive Portal built in to the controller doesn't support RADIUS authentication for users. This isn't ideal for BYOD devices but I appear to be able to implement an external captive portal. I've been trying to locate alternatives but I'm struggling? Is there something built into NPS? What have other people using? I'm hoping for a portal/login page that would authenticate users based on their active directory credentials.
MicrodigitUK Posted August 30, 2017 Posted August 30, 2017 We use a Smoothwall with the SSL Login page as our captive portal. Works really well but we did already use the Smoothwall as a web filter/proxy on our workstations, so was a very simple setup to add this for BYOD. https://help.smoothwall.net/Hearst/Content/ui/auth/ssllogin.htm
lav Posted August 30, 2017 Posted August 30, 2017 We use pfsense for exactly that scenario. Pfsense as radius client to NPS radius. Works really well.
AlanD Posted August 30, 2017 Posted August 30, 2017 Why use a captive portal? Surely most devices just use Apps for stuff...and it's just annoying to open a browser and go through a logon process first. Why not use enterprise wpa? ....which does work with radius. If it's not for BYOD but to use School provided shared devices where a logon only lasts 45 minutes or whatever, then I would be looking for my web filter/monitor to provide a captive portal. In our case smoothwall does this....and I think many if not most other solutions do this. Ultimately it's the filter that needs the logon details...the wireless doesn't really care.
cpjitservices Posted August 30, 2017 Posted August 30, 2017 Easy. PFSense. Job done. We use it daily. There is also one in Untangle that is also very good.
