Gongalong Posted August 25, 2017 Posted August 25, 2017 Hi folks, We've just put 1703 on a handful of Clevo W950TU laptops and airplane mode is now constantly switching on and off, as if the hotkey is held down. We've run Windows Update, Intel Drive Update, and install the Hotkey and Airplane mode software/drivers. Nothing has fixed it. We've also followed a bunch of other Airplane Mode related troubleshooting e.g. disabling control in wireless driver, disabling RadioEnable in registry, also no joy. Anyone come across this issue and have a fix? Thanks
notsogenius Posted August 25, 2017 Posted August 25, 2017 I think we had the same problem with some Stone Netbooks at our work - based off the Clevo chassis afaik, I'm not 100% what the fix was as not at work till Tuesday now, but I think it may have been the order in which the drivers were installed. I think we had to install Chipset drivers and then network drivers and then the hotkey drivers. Hope that's helpful Thanks 1
Gongalong Posted August 25, 2017 Author Posted August 25, 2017 Looks like we might have a fix. We got a driver from the supplier that seems identical to Clevo's driver, yet works.
notsogenius Posted August 25, 2017 Posted August 25, 2017 Funny how that works! If it causes you any more probs let me know and I'll have a look at our fix when I'm back to work Tuesday. 1
dhicks Posted August 25, 2017 Posted August 25, 2017 Anyone come across this issue and have a fix? Yes. The issue (for us, anyway) turned out to be to do with a driver update that Windows 10 performs for the "Insyde HIDClass" device. This would seem to be the "airplane mode" button, which in some way gets seen as a separate device by Windows. The device's driver seems to get updated by Windows in the background, as if you were plugging in a keyboard or mouse, so there's no user interaction or any other indication the driver is updating. The driver for the device was updated June 2017 - before that date we were imaging PCs with 1703 with no problems, so that's probably the version that caused issues. The driver is updated as if a device is plugged in, but what actually seems to get installed gets put in Programs & Features, as if it's a piece of software. In our setup, trying to uninstall the software doesn't work as it's promptly re-installed. The solution (for us) seems to be to disable updates for the specific hardware ID, i.e.: https://www.howtogeek.com/263851/how-to-prevent-windows-from-automatically-updating-specific-drivers/ The hardware IDs reported by our laptops - yours might differ: ACPI\VEN_PNP&DEV_C000 ACPI\PNPC000 PNPC000 We disable updates for the above IDs via a registry setting, although you can also set those values via a GPO setting. 1
Gongalong Posted August 29, 2017 Author Posted August 29, 2017 It's definitely proving odd, as we were given a driver by the laptop supplier that seemed to work. But having imaged a few more laptops and run the driver again it seems to break the Windows install. We also have a driver from Clevo, so will give that a go, or try the registry method.
Gongalong Posted August 29, 2017 Author Posted August 29, 2017 My colleague got it working previously, by luck. You have to uninstall the HID driver that's already there. It will prompt to reboot, but *do not* reboot. Install the replacement driver. It will prompt to reboot, which is fine at this point. Then it seems to work fine.
