AirPrint for iPads

Hi there, I have a 2016 server and I am having an absolute nightmare, trying to share some of my printers such that AirPrint iPads can print via the server.

 

Has anyone been able to achieve this?

I have installed Bonjour, installed the correct drivers, but when I use an iPad, nothing is showing up in the print options.

The iPads are on the right network (same one as the server).

Sadly, the printers in question are not AirPrint compatible, hence my trying to do it through the server, rather than just switching on AirPrint on each individual printer and not needing to share it out via server.

 

Any help would be much appreciated.

Bonjour alone will not make your printers discoverable to iPads..... only Macs.

If you want the ipads to be able to print to your windows server, you need a third party tool. I remember one I used years ago called 'AirPrint Activator' but don't know if it's still around now?

I wouldn't use AirPrint with iPads. Bonjour is a nightmare in a school. The last thing you want is 50 printers showing up and users choosing the wrong one. I would recommend using the printer manufacturer's APP which usually allows you to stick a QR code on the printer and when you want to print at that printer you just point the camera at the QR code and send the document to the APP. You need firewall/gateway rules between you wires lol and printer network of course as you would for Bonjour.

Luckily PaperCut pair it with an App to avoid such anarchy and obviously you still get to monitor printing and billing as you would a PC, considering the discount offered to education, it is a really useful tool.

With PaperCut, is it possible to control which iPads can print to what printers? I work in a school and wondered if it was possible from stopping students print to a printer in a different department? Also when an iPad prints it tend to come out full page A4. Does anyone know if this can be changed?

Its all done by user, rather than device. The process for actually printing isn't changed on the iPad really - so, if it lets you choose paper size, it will do so with or without the Papercut aspect of it all.

We use Lantronics Xprintservers. They have to be in the same access point as your I devices since it uses UDP just like Airprint but you can add any network printer in the organization to it (Example it can share a printer in another building to that access points I devices)

You don't need to be on the same network/Vlan to use Airprint...but printers will not automatically appear in "i" devices sitting in a different network. That might be a good thing - otherwise all your printers for the whole school appear in a drop down list. There are various mechanisms for readvertising airprint servers selectively - including "hard coding" printer details into say apple configurator (or possibly an MDM depending on its capability).

 

..I still prefer using a printer's "App" and a QR code stuck on the device.
