Redirecting from one server to another (Single client)

Hi All,

 

We are trying to creat a redirect from one server to another. The reason being is that we have transfered all users home folders from an old server to a new one and before we change the entry on DNS so that clients redirect to the new server shares on the new server rather than the origional shares on the old we want to test it on one client.

 

We have chenged the hosts file to redirect to the new server and when doing a ping test it shows its pinging the correct new server. However when we do NSlookup it still resolves to the old server. This is confirmed by seeing that when we create a document and save it in the users home drive it is still saving in users share on the old server.

 

Would anyone know a quick way to test this without having to change the record on DNS?

Thanks but I don't think you actually read my question "We have changed the hosts file to redirect to the new server".

Have you tried running "ipconfig /flushdns", then tried the nslookup again? That should clear its cache and then it should pick up hosts file before trying dns.

 

I tried to do this (but did it via dns rather than hosts) a while ago and found windows just wouldn't let you browse to \\server unless you used the server's actual hostname rather than an alias. Never got to the bottom of it, and think it was either on XP or 7 with 2003 server so it may be different these days...

Have you tried turning it off and back on again?

Have you tried removing the local profile on the computer you are testing it on?

If this is the solution it will pose a problem as you're not likely going to want to delete all locally cached profiles on all computers
