Considering Tesla have a semi truck event happening at the end of September, they seem confident that they can solve the range issue. Now maybe that will just mean they give enough range to fit in with a lorry drivers allowable driving limits, but I don't see them producing something that won't be bought and trucks need range.

Robotaxis will fix the minor range issue, but currently you can drive 200 miles and recharge in 30 mins, do you really want to be driving for more than 3 hours without a 30 min break anyway?

Think of how long the queues would be at a petrol station if it took 30 minutes to fill up.
mavhc Posted August 12, 2017 Posted August 12, 2017 Average uk driver goes 8000 miles in a year, 4.3 miles/kWh, so 1860 kWh/year. Assume 6 kWh charging rate (ie home, not fast charging), takes 1 hour per day to charge on average. 1 lamp post charger could be shared by 8 cars, for those without a driveway/garage 90% of the time you're charging at home, according to LeafSpy my 2014 Leaf has only been fast charged once. 6% of trips in 2014 were more than 25 miles, 12% of strategic road network motorway trips are more than 50 miles, 2% of total trips are >50 miles. 384 trips per driver per year, so let's say 2% of those need fast charging. so 8 per year. 30 million cars, so 240 million fast charges per year, 660,000 charges per day, each needing 30 mins Assume that's all within 12 hours per day, we'd need 27500 simultaneous charges. Currently there's about 2300 according to https://www.zap-map.com/statistics/ so only 10 times more if they were perfectly distributed, so 20 times more. Currently 45 per month being added. At current rates that'll take 97 years, so we only need to go 10 times faster than now. Assume 50kW charging, that's 1.3 GW extra needed to rapid charge. Hinkley Point C is 3 GW for comparison
