It does require drilling a hole in the front of the ATM - all of the ATM's around here have CCTV pointing at them, and I can't imagine drilling a gap that large in the front of (hopefully toughened) plastic will be the fasted operation in the world...

Many ATMs here are not protected in that way, or any other that is easily discerned.

 

But, then, perhaps that's the point.

This is nothing new I'm afraid. It's well known ATMs run on outdated software.

CCTV isn't reviewed until after-the-fact, and it's unlikely Mr. Joe Bloggs is going to try and stop you if you're in a hi-vis and hard-hat.

 

I can't see it being too difficult to slap a sheet of hard plastic on top of the hole you drilled too.. Something that's the same colour as the machine or has some kind of picture/instructions/whatever that doesn't look out of place.

The hole is probably that large so a person can just reach in and find a USB extender cable (if applicable) or plug their own into the exposed ports on the machine. Unless you know the machine has a USB extender cable and can fish it out with wire or something, you're not gonna be able to make a smaller hole.

I'm probably more worried about my PIN being lifted from CCTV footage in shops, tbh. At least that's relatively easy to defend against (provided I remember to cover over my keystrokes).
