TwistedHelixis Posted July 20, 2017 Posted July 20, 2017 Hello, We recently had a new member of staff start in our office who came from a school that could email parents directly from within Sims by pressing the little envelope symbol. She has not described the process very well to me but think it might have opened outlook. We currently use Gmail to send single emails or school comms to send bulk. Is it possible to get sims to use either of these or is it possible to use something else as she simply MUST have this option.
PhilNeal Posted July 20, 2017 Posted July 20, 2017 Individual emails can be sent directly from various places in SIMS without buying InTouch.

TwistedHelixis Posted July 20, 2017 Author Posted July 20, 2017 Does this work if you don't have an email client installed? We use Gmail. That's what I am trying to find out, and if it does need client installed can this use our gmail system.
bobsmith Posted July 20, 2017 Posted July 20, 2017 if you're sitting in front of SIMS, open up a student record, go to their family contacts and open one up with an email address. There's a button that says "Send", what happens if you press it? I suspect it's hardcoded to just open whatever email client that windows thinks is the default - our IT boys are very unlikely to have done anything clever to get it to work here. (Outlook desktop client)
TwistedHelixis Posted July 20, 2017 Author Posted July 20, 2017 f you're sitting in front of SIMS, open up a student record, go to their family contacts and open one up with an email address. There's a button that says "Send", what happens if you press it? It just opens chrome browser on google search page
TwistedHelixis Posted July 20, 2017 Author Posted July 20, 2017 Does sims have anywhere to enter smpt info?
TwistedHelixis Posted July 20, 2017 Author Posted July 20, 2017 Just found this that might work, Ill give it a go When you click on an email address hyperlink, it will open your default desktop email client, with the address field already filled in. This type of hyperlink starts with mailto:, rather than http://, telling your computer to open an email client, rather than a website. But you can associate the Mailto link with Gmail. In Chrome, open Gmail and click the Protocol Handler Icon in the address bar. Select Allow, to Allow mail.google.com to open all email links. If you can’t see the icon, click the Chrome menu icon (three vertical dots) and go to Settings > Advanced > Content Settings (under Privacy and Security). Click Handlers and make sure this setting is enabled to Allow sites to ask to become default handlers for protocols (recommended). If mail.google.com isn’t yet listed under mailto, you should see the icon in the address bar in your Gmail tab now. Otherwise, remove the application that is currently listed under mailto, so you can associate Mailto links with Gmail. 1
TwistedHelixis Posted July 20, 2017 Author Posted July 20, 2017 (edited) Doing the above does work - YAY EDIT - I will paste an image and better step by steps in a bit, just in case someone else needs to do this. Edited July 20, 2017 by TwistedHelixis

I see it now and confirm it just opens up Chrome browser. Edited July 20, 2017 by fiza
TwistedHelixis Posted July 20, 2017 Author Posted July 20, 2017 Step by step - Getting Sims to open gmail in chrome browser -Open gmail in chrome and you should see the following icon near the address bar Click on the icon and click enable Back in Sims click on send (email) and it should now open gmail with the email address of the person entered. ------------------ If you don't see the above image you will need to find the Handlers section in Chrome settings and enable it first. I had no idea gmail / chrome could do this - Hope this helps someone else. 2
