Hi Has anybody come across issues launching sims services manager? I am unable to launch the SIMS Services Manager as it tries to connect to localhost:50000 then shows "this page cant be displayed". Something simple im missing? Sorry im new to this school and still familiarising myself to all the systems here. Thanks

couple of the simpler things to try first

if you have a proxy make sure you include *localhost* in your proxy exceptions

Check Sims services manager is running in services.msc

Have you tried restarting the SIMS Services Manager in the Services.msc? That usually does the trick for me but I do work on Green Abbey all the time, not in a school environment!

Are you using WPAD and auto detect settings?

Thanks. Localhost is in proxy exceptions and service running. We use Smoothwall as our proxy/firewall

Try unticking the proxy. this is just to check that your exceptions are working

As a side note, if you are new to the site it may be worth knowing who your sims support is whether it is your lea, capita or another 3rd party. You will be able to get the call open at least whilst you look to resolve it yourself.

Thanks i did try to log a call with the LA however they say they cant help since its Capita that have installed this!! Capita say i need to contact the LA since they provide the SIMS support. so im going round in circles and its frustrating. Seems like non of them are willing to help.

Thanks guys. Not had a chance to look at today will get back on it on Monday. There are a lot of server updates which haven't been done for a while it would appear. I plan to first get all updates up to date and take it from there.

if you open resource monitor and go to the network page, you can see what is currently listening on port 50000, if it isn't SIMS Services Manager then you'll need to change the config to either reserve that port for SSM or give SSM a new port.

Thanks tried that nothing is using port 50000

If the SSM service is running, then that should be using port 50000. Have a look for an item in the Image column (in resource monitor | Network | Listening Ports) called SimsServiceHost.Service.exe and see what port it is listening on, then alter your shortcut to SSM to use that port instead.

That doesnt appear to be running where you mentioned. Could be the cause of the problem? Tried to run it manually from the file location but then get the following error "Cannot start service from the command line or debugger. A winwows Service must first be installed(using installutil.exe) and then started with the ServerExplorer, Windows Services Afministrative tool or the NET START command."

Anyone use Smoothwall in their environment and got SSM working?

Yeah we have that setup and ssm works fine. Do you define a proxy manually or do you use wpad?

if you look at C:\Program Files\SIMS\SIMS Services Manager\SimsServiceHost\SimsServiceHost.dll.config (assuming you installed it tot the default location) do you have 3 lines that say?

We didnt have the third line I have put that in now.

In that case this is a call for Capita as you've found that nothing is listening on port 50000, SSM is configured for port 50000, the service is running and the service doesn't show up in the list of things listening to any port. I have never come across this scenario and it suggests the SSM program itself is erroring in some way.

Thank you for all your help much appreciated.

I have a little script that I made that resets port reservations and then copies and replaces a SimsServiceHost.dll.config to change the port if the port its trying to use is already in use by a different application. When ever it pops up saying the page cannot be loaded for me, I just run my script and most of the time it starts working, if you want I can pm you the files.
