Is anyone using the VPN service that Schools Broadband can setup through Fortinet?

They have set it up for me but the installer doesn't work on Windows 10. I'm going to log another ticket but wondered if anyone has it working on Win10.

Or whether there would be a manual way of creating it without the installer.

Done that. Seemed to download a lot more than the client that SB sent me originally.

Still won't connect though.

Seems to install as a dial up rather than VPN. Is that correct?

Hi @snagrat

I'm away on business at the moment but have just asked our product manager to take a look at this for you too. I'm not aware of a generic issue with the VPN software or with Forticlient (which does VPN and a whole host of other functionality too) when used in conjunction with Windows 10 but we'll get it checked out for you.

Our product manager Rob is actually with Fortinet at the moment in France on NSE training so will ask them too.

Thanks

So I was being a little stupid. Didn't realise a client got installed so was trying to connect from the VPN list in Windows 10.

I've got it working now using the VPN client but also had a play with FortiClient. However when on the Fortigate I can't seem to be able to add a new FortiClient profile. Is this correct?

Good Morning,

No worries, it can be a little confusing but glad you have got it sorted.

It is correct that you cannot add a FortiClient profile as that only applies to the full license version rather than the free version downloaded from the internet.

We are currently running through a development cycle in order to bring the full version of FortiClient to our customers. If you are interested send me a PM and we can have a chat.

Thanks,

What features of the free license do we get through the FortiClient then?

Just wondering if it is best to use just the VPN or the FortiClient

You can do quite a bit on the free licence but it won't integrate with a Fortigate or Forticlient EMS which gives you a central view for all of your Forticlient estate and allows you to manage it all from one interface.

We are probably going to re-launch Forticlient very soon as its a really feature packed product and in our opinion when used in combination with our Fortigate firewalls adds a lot more value than just Sophos AV on its own for a similar price point.

See https://www.fortinet.com/content/dam/fortinet/assets/data-sheets/FortiClient.pdf for quite a bit more information.

Thanks

Hi Dave, would there be an increased cost to schools to use these other features when launched?

Posted

Hi @nathan,

yes there will be a cost which is likely to be on a per device basis just as other vendors are.

That's all I can say for the moment so watch this space :)

As always we're looking for beta testers of our new services so if its of interest do let me know.

Thanks

To add onto this, how do people deploy out the Forticlient VPN? I can install it manually through the exe but the only way to get an MSI or to get the deployment config is through the fortinet support portal which you need a serial number of the actual device (Which I believe SB has rather than the school) to access.

I have a .msi but that doesn't seem to install with a config file unless you know otherwise?

I push .msi then manually set up connection
