WSUS setup for MDT Reference Image?

Hi all,

 

It seems that MDT isn't picking updates from WSUS.

 

My WSUS install is very new so I am not sure what should be set on it to ensure MDT can pick up updates.

 

I have set an Automatic Approval rule for updates to Unassigned Computers but the TS during my install just says 'Searching for updates' and then restarts my PC. It doesn't seem to actual install updates.

 

How can I check if this is the case?

First question, have you setup a GPO for your workstations to pickup where the WSUS server is?

Make sure you have the following set in customsettings.ini (replace mdtserver with the name of your server, do the same for deploymentshare$ if you aren't using the defaults) :

SLShare=\\mdtserver\deploymentshare$\Logs

The above will copy the logs from the client to the server at the end of the deployment.

 

set the following in customsettings.ini

WSUSServer=http://wsus-server:8530

 

install CMtrace on the mdt server (just client tools as you don't need the rest): https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=50012

 

update your deployment share in the MDT console

 

run a task sequence until it completes, then look at the ztiwindowsupdate.log file in CMtrace (on the server). It will be in the location you specified in SLShare. Within the log file it will tell you if it used a WSUS server or not and also what updates have been installed.

MDT task sequence occurs way before the PC is on the domain to pick up the GPO
