Sounds an interesting setup and given food for thought.

I'd be interested to know how are you dealing with redundancy or do you already have redundant internet connections into the schools?

Are you connecting sites over the internet or VPN/VPLS?

I'm looking into have two systems, 1 at two different sites in a slave and master config. Both sites have 100mb lines which we were forced to have as there's no FTTC around. I still have a few details to work out on this. All the phones will be connection via VPN.

Again, i still need to test all of this before we invest into the kit.

I put in a FreePBX system (around 100 extensions) about a year ago and its worked great *touch wood*. I setup a warm spare and manually backup/restore settings over from one to the other (although you can set it up to do this automatically) when any changes are made which is not too often. To failover to the spare I simply swap the static IP's of the servers and the phones and trunks reconnect within a few minutes.

As others have said you can set which extensions use which outbound routes. We bought the Sysadmin Pro module so we could use voicemail notifications.

Out of interest what phones are you planning to use?

Makes complete sense, I've just come from a school and they have an extra 2 PTSN lines that they have no idea what they are for - ruled out the usual's such as redcare. Hate schools wasting money

We had a phone line in a cupboard in the dining hall we were paying for god knows how long (at least 4 years) before I took phones into IT from our site manager!
