Why do none of my Hyper-v VM servers shutdown from the host GUI

I have been meaning to look at this issue for ages.

 

Both host and VM's are all 2012r2 standard servers.

 

I have never been able to initiate a shutdown command from my Hyper-V hosts to remotely shutdown my servers, if I need to shut one down I have to remote on to that server and do the normal start / shutdown process.

 

When I try to initiate a shutdown from the host the GUI displays shutting down but it stops at about 90% and just stays at that, I then need to do a power off from the GUI to actually get it to turn off, so I believe its shutting down for the most part but not turning off.

 

I believe its actually an issue with the VM's rather than the host as I installed a new test host and a new test 2012r2 server which did work, but when I copied a live vm server to this it still would not shut down.

 

Any ideas?

 

EDIT - This is only an issue on the VM DC's, the VM data servers shutdown fine.

Are your integration services up to date on the VMs?

Yes.

This has always been an issue since installing them about 3 years back and I have always installed the integration updates when they are needed.

Sorry I have a cold and should have put - its only an issue with the DC's not the data servers.

I look after 3 schools, each school has 1 host with 2 VM's, a DC and a data server. The issue is at each school.

Hmm, it does sound like an HVIS issue, current version for 2k12 r2 is 6.3.9600.18398 from July 2016,

 

You can run

get-vm | ft Name,IntegrationServicesVersion

in power shell on the host, if you want to check all of the VMs at once.

Versions are all reported back as 6.3.9600.18398

Do your VMs have the "Operating system shutdown" Integration Service enabled? This is required for shutting down VMs from the Hyper-V Manager.

Still an issue with both host and vm firewall turned off.

 

What is really strange is I have used the same install media and followed the same setup instructions for my test server, and on my test host server the test DC vm shuts down as expected, but if I import a copy of the live DC vm on to my test host server its hangs at 90% shutdown. I believe that 90% is the point the OS has actually shutdown and when the turn off (power) is initiated.

 

The issue I have with it not shutting down is what would happen during a power cut. The UPS would send shut down command to the host but the host would not be able to shut down the vm's.

 

Any more ideas?
