Camera for primary

Hi all

 

It seems that my psycic powers have failed me yet again. It appears that several classes have broken cameras that I haven't fixed - my excuse it that they didn't tell me - i Know - weak excuse

 

anyway - result is that I need a cheap, reasonable quality point-and-shoot camera which is simple enough for our teachers and TAs to use

So - REALLY mean point and shoot

 

rechargeable preferably

 

has any one got any recomendations of stuff they use that seems to work

I use Canon Ixus and Powershot cameras here, simple to use and they seem to stand up to the battering they get, I still have to replace at least one a year though. Edited June 26, 2017 by GuyJD

We've gone for Olympus Tough series cameras in the past. Haven't had many complaints but depending on your budget I wouldn't necessarily describe them as cheap. No extendible lens means one less thing to be broken when it's dropped/smashed/submerged in PVA.

 

We're likely going to be trying out these Panasonic Tough Point'n'Shoots at a school joining our MAT. They're a lot cheaper than the Olympus cameras but remains to be seen whether they fare as well.

I'd echo the Powershot and IXUS recommendations. The tiny (cigarette packet) cheap Nikons with image stabilisation are pretty reliable too - even our least artistic staff can get decent results.

 

The Sony DSCRX100m1 is a lovely camera but at ~£300 I suspect it's too pricey.

found a cheap one for £49 - seems to do everything we need - ace YM-002

 

asked yesterday for everyone to tell me if they need a camera - by the end of the day I had 4 requests

- as this is a primary - this seemed like a lot of people who have not got a camera seeing as about 6 have gone missing from my office

 

but anyway - got a quote from that nice Colin at VeryPC and put the order in (plus sneaking some stuff I want as usual)

 

and today - 3 more requests cos 'they couldn't find me yeasterday'

WHAT - am I that difficult to find???

 

anyway - no ordering 7 new cameras for a school with 8 classes

wonder how many will me mysteriously 'found' over the next few weeks

We bought 24x Nikon Coolpix S32 and S33 camera's a couple of years ago - NEVER AGAIN!!!

 

I got them primarily because they are waterproof and do not have protruding zoom to break but the tiny non-standard USB ports on the camera broke on nearly every camera. They also took blurry pictures in most cases as they are optimised for underwater and outdoors I think. The S33 is slightly improved with a standard microUSB but some of these were broken also. In the end I purchased some third party external battery chargers and USB SD card readers and banned the teachers from using the inbuilt usb port at all.

 

We are also a primary. I am thinking of buying some Android Phones without SIM cards or iPod Touches next time.

 

Was also looking at some cheap Go Pro clones which should not break to easily but may have the same usb port issues and most don't do stills just video.

At my old secondary we had 2 digital cameras - 1 only went out occasionally as we also had 20 iPod touches. Simple, effective and tell them to email themselves the photos when their done. I guess in a Primary situation 1 per class and let the teacher transfer it would work just as well.

 

** Data protection - we always insisted on iPods being returned after every use for a complete reinstall of the OS, wiping all data. PITA but it did the job! **

The new cameras seem ok

Quality not brill but you push the button and it takes a pic

 

 

I am intending on them being used mostly by TAs for photos while the main photo taker will be a new windows tablet used mostly by the teacher

 

Seem good value but are obviously cheap in look and feel
