Mobile number contact but keep number?

Hi can anyone suggest the best way to deal with cancelling my mobile contract but holding on to the number? Can I port my number to Google voice? I basically want the number but the ability to divert calls and text to my work phone?

I *think* you can port it to a PAYG SIM to retain the number. You should then be able to redirect any calls depending on the capabilities of the network.

I seem to recall most PAYG plans don't support call forwarding, I needed it for Hullomail took work (which forwards calls to an answering service). I think Giffgaff did but it's a while since I left PAYG behind...
