3enjammin Posted June 20, 2017 Posted June 20, 2017 Hello - As the title says, I have 3 schools that wanted sims discover deployed. one install went straight on, and 2 other sites fail when using the transfer utility ("an error has occurred. please check the log file for more information") I have had a look about as I am unsure to which log file it is referring to (maybe "AdministrationUtility.LogFile") - there are errors in there relating to discover with about the same time the transfer failed. (please can anyone confirm?) Our local authority support have tried and failed to get this working. They escalated with capita who took a db backup and failed to recreate the error. I have tried reinstalling discover from scratch , running sims index patch, restarting services etc. We have basically got to a point where support / capita wont help any more. something is obviously different on one of the servers, but I am unable to progress. Discover is deployed ok but I just cant get the db syncing Please can anyone throw me something?
Michael Posted June 20, 2017 Posted June 20, 2017 Are you sure (stab in the dark), it's not the default locked down SQL Server settings, rather than a SIMS issue?
3enjammin Posted June 20, 2017 Author Posted June 20, 2017 that rings true with that log file - please what do you mean by default locked down?
Michael Posted June 20, 2017 Posted June 20, 2017 Named pipes for example, which by default are disabled. - - - Updated - - - Thing is, I'd expect your Capita support to identify something that obvious. It's fairly typical that you have to relax SQL settings from the default with any SQL install. 1
3enjammin Posted June 20, 2017 Author Posted June 20, 2017 thanks for the heads up - I will find out now
3enjammin Posted June 20, 2017 Author Posted June 20, 2017 (edited) yea all enabled (tcp/ip shared pipes and shared memory just returned to a very similar thread - http://www.edugeek.net/forums/mis-systems/139230-cannot-set-application-role-simsuser-because-does-not-exist-password.html and I am trying the re-index patch again. 3enjammin Posted June 20, 2017 Author Posted June 20, 2017 So if I was able to create the discover db using solus3 using the credentials that I later then used for logging into the transfer utility I can rule out sims authentication and I should be looking at SQL authentication? There is also the question of running the discover services and which account I should be running them as. I am afraid this is where I come unstuck. Thanks for your time
Michael Posted June 20, 2017 Posted June 20, 2017 You're on the right lines, but really Capita should be able to sort these issues for you.
3enjammin Posted June 20, 2017 Author Posted June 20, 2017 after some 4 months of sporadic working on this issue, my LA support have tried everything they know, had capita log on and try on one of the two sites, given capita db backups etc I have made no headway. I am told pretty much that Capita couldn't recreate my issue on their test server and so can't / won't progress. Yet I have this working on one of my sites beautifully. It is pretty infuriating I do agree though. Its part of the core (I think(?)) and should be supported as such
Michael Posted June 20, 2017 Posted June 20, 2017 Are the application files and DB on the same physical server, or separate servers and are these virtualised? If separate servers or separate VLANs (unlikely), then firewall is a possible issue. Be interesting if Capita actually did a 'like for like' test of your configuration, as their test setup may not reflect yours whatsoever.
3enjammin Posted June 20, 2017 Author Posted June 20, 2017 Yes is all pretty vanilla sims server holds physical files and db The server itself is virtualised . No firewall all on one subnet. It would be pretty easy to replicate.
Banjo Posted June 21, 2017 Posted June 21, 2017 If it were me I'd try installing another SQL Instance (even use Express using the Capita SQL installer and settings) and attach the SIMs db from using restore from a .bak. The run the Discover installers and try to link them together. Capita can get this to work offsite so it's either your SQL instance or a Windows setting. 1
Esteban_Child_of_the_Sun Posted June 22, 2017 Posted June 22, 2017 (edited) Assuming you are running the Discover services as NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE then the following may help. Run from the server either through a batch file or manually on the command line. The pause commands are there for if you run it as a batch file, you can review the results before moving on to the next command. Depending on which (if any) commands fail and what error message they fail with should help identify your problem. I have assumed your Discover database is called Discover. I would suggest stopping the 2 Discover services, archiving the 2 Discover log files associated with the services and re-starting the services (if the services are active the files are locked) set SERVERNAME=MIS-Server set SQLINSTANCE=SIMS2012 set SAPASSWORD=Wouldn't_You_Like_To_Know set database=SIMS set DiscoInstall=C:\Program Files (x86)\SIMS Echo Create user in SIMS Database sqlcmd -S %SERVERNAME%\%SQLINSTANCE% -U sa -P %SAPASSWORD% -d %database% -Q"EXEC sp_grantlogin 'NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE'" pause Echo create the catalogue "%DiscoInstall%\Discover Services\Discover.CatalogLoader.Console.exe" /operation=create /AssemblyFileName="%DiscoInstall%\Discover Services\Discover.SIMS.Catalog.dll" -Server="%SERVERNAME%\%SQLINSTANCE%" -username="sa" -password="%SAPASSWORD%" -database="Discover" -verbose pause ECHO SIMS Discover Database User Transfer "%DiscoInstall%\Discover Services\Discover.SqlUserManager.Console.exe" /operation=synchronisewithsims -Server="%SERVERNAME%\%SQLINSTANCE%" -username="sa" -password="%SAPASSWORD%" -simsdatabase="%database%" -Discoverdatabase="Discover" -verbose pause ECHO SIMS Discover Grant Group Synchronisation Rights "%DiscoInstall%\Discover Services\Discover.SqlUserManager.Console.exe" /operation=GrantDataViewMonitorAccountRights -AccountName="NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE" -Server="%SERVERNAME%\%SQLINSTANCE%" -Username="sa" -Password="%SAPASSWORD%" -SIMSdatabase="%database%" -Discoverdatabase="Discover" -verbose pause ECHO SIMS Discover Grant Transfer Rights "%DiscoInstall%\Discover Services\Discover.SqlUserManager.Console.exe" /operation=GrantTransferAccountRights -AccountName="NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE" -Server="%SERVERNAME%\%SQLINSTANCE%" -Username="sa" -Password="%SAPASSWORD%" -SIMSdatabase="%database%" -Discoverdatabase="Discover" -verbose pause Edited June 22, 2017 by Esteban_Child_of_the_Sun 1

Michael Posted June 22, 2017 Posted June 22, 2017 The first line is a clue - I presume you have tried updating the Discover DB? Could it be that x version of the SIMS DB doesn't play nice with x version of the Discover DB? Would be good to confirm versions on the working setup.
3enjammin Posted June 22, 2017 Author Posted June 22, 2017 Hi Michael, Both Sims & Discover are on the Spring 2017 version if that is what you mean? I found someone here who had fixed their discover woes by doing this, and checked.
Banjo Posted June 22, 2017 Posted June 22, 2017 Within SQL what accounts do the services run on? SQL Server = LocalSystem ? SQL Server Agent = NT Authority/NetworkService ? SQL Server Browser = NT Authority/LocalService ?
Michael Posted June 22, 2017 Posted June 22, 2017 Just wondering - is it possible to re-install Discover, even though it's at the correct stated version? 1
Esteban_Child_of_the_Sun Posted June 22, 2017 Posted June 22, 2017 looking at the errors, it looks like there is a mismatch between the version of the catalog (the files in the Discover Services folder), the version of the Discover Database (and/or config files) or the version of SIMS. For reference, the error "Warning: Data view has no icon attribute, using default." is one you will see at all sites. It is referring to parts of Discover that aren't visible to the end user and thus have never been assigned an icon (where as graphs, groups and menu headers all have icons) I would suggest starting again, while it is possible to track down the particular error(s) it is usually quicker to wipe it all out and re-install (then if you had been using it, restore the backup). 1. Unistall the Discover services (and not always needed but you could uninstall the client as well) from Control Panel 2. Delete the Discover Database from SQL Management Studio with the option to drop logins selected. 3. Delete C:\Program Files (x86)\SIMS\Discover* (or wherever the folders were installed to) 4. Delete the folder C:\ProgramData\Discover 5. Get the installation version of Discover that matches your current version of SIMS 6. Run the typical installation and make sure 'NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE' is sues to run the services (you can use other account but that gets more complicated, and for now I'd recommend keeping it simple to prove it works) 7. Open the admin utility and run a transfer for the current year only. (I would give it a 40% chance of succeeding, if it fails run the script above and find the next set of error messages) 1
3enjammin Posted June 22, 2017 Author Posted June 22, 2017 thanks both for your replies. @esteban I have tried doing this 3 times or so on both the sites with the supervision of our LA support, including a reboot after service uninstall. Will try again. @Michael service accounts as per screenshot

3enjammin Posted June 27, 2017 Author Posted June 27, 2017 (edited) Still the same as it ever was. Going to try it all again using local admin rather than domain admin. Incidentally Capita apparently told my support that SQL Service pack 3 could be at fault. - I couldn't get a reasoning behind this although once I get desperate enough I shall probably try ripping that out ...
