Backing Up Windows Servers on Linux

Hello everyone - well, disabling SMBv1 has knocked all my Windows servers out of Backuppc.

 

Most are virtualised, and the LUNs themselves back up, but I'd definitely like 'data' backups too from within Windows itself.

 

Backuppc is out, anything that needs cygwin (with the need for an account password in plain text) is out too. Whatever it is I want it to run on a Linux box.

 

Anyone have any great suggestions to throw me?

Then you are the minority that requires to leave smb 1 enabled and ensure your servers are patched... Am I over simplifying this?

Thanks both - No Oaktech you're right on the money, but I'd rather not leave it on of course. Thanks also danbuntu, I actually do use that currently but we ALSO had backuppc. I do back up to, like, the point of mania and was just hoping to stuff a switch in a .conf file and have it all magically spring to life again. Oh well.

What version of Samba is on the server, it may be something in a samba config file will get you sorted (or possibly a switch in smbclient command that backuppc runs)

 

edit: In fact, looks like someone has written a patch to commit to latest branch - you may be able to apply the patch to your install (looks like it's the config.pl file), possibly using SMB2 if you don't have Samba 4 installed.

GAAAHHH I went and bloomin' did that AGES back but I bloomin' didn't know you put "-mSMB#" in I put "-m SMB#" in.

I do wish there would be a standard for space/no space with variables on software...

AFAIK on Linux/Unix a minus option requires a space and a double minus option requires an equals, eg -f somefile vs --file=somefile

Hmmm, well it started but I was premature in my excitement, it still just won't have it.

 

I think I'll investigate a different way of backing up the Windows servers.
