Hi guys.

A while back, we changed our server over, from a Windows 2000 to a Windows 2003 server. We also upgraded our switches from bog standard switches to Netgear GS700TS switches.

I've been noticing on a few machines, that every now and again, they seem to loose the desktop screen. On further inspection, this was because the network link has temporarily been broken, and refreshing the screen gets the desktop back (has been redirected from the network).

Looking in the event log, I noticed in the System section, some Warnings, with source E100B, and a description "Adapter Intel® PRO/100 VE Network Connection: Adapter Link Down". Then, 2 seconds later, an information, with same source, but description "Adapter Intel® PRO/100 VE Network Connection: Adapter Link Up", followed by a source of tcpip, with description "The system detected that network adapter \DEVICE\TCPIP_{83FF1534-BF7D-493C-8D88-CFCB5DCF9268} was connected to the network, and has initiated normal operation over the network adapter.".

Now I'm unsure whether this is a problem with the server, the switch, or the actual computer, but I noticed some references to Intel network cards having problems with cisco networks, but we don't have a cisco network.

Anyone else any ideas of the problems?

Cheers :)

From what you're describing, the problem sounds like it's between the switch and the workstation. If it was with the server, you'd have a lot more problems than just losing icons time to time.

You could try basics such as updating the driver, changing the patch lead workstation end, but also patching into another physical switch and see if the problem continues.

We had the same problem just the other day with our Intel Nics and a Netgear switch. Turned out to be that we had Spanning Tree turned on. As soon as we turned it off, the errors went away and everything returned to normal.
