Is it normal for a new server to be missing the domain PolicyDefinitions folder?

I have just installed a test 2012r2 server, added AD, DNS, DHCP roles. All working fine.

 

I just went to check C:\Windows\SYSVOL\domain\Policies\ and the PolicyDefinitions folder is missing.

 

Have I checked the correct location?

Do I need to manually add this folder and the files?

Yes, if its a new DC then it wont be there, youll need to create it - i had this issue in the past.

Have you checked that the sysvol replication has worked correctly? DCDIAG should help.

You would have thought 2012 would have this folder by default, but nope, have to create it as @timbo said.

Oh, I misread. Brand new domain - yes, you have to create it yourself!

Jeepers, I always assumed I needed to do it in the paste as the older servers were originally 2008. Makes no sense it not being part of newer OS's.

 

Ill update my 'New server instructions' with the info.

 

Out of interest is it there on 2016?

One last question - If have Windows 7, windows 8.1 & windows 10 clients, do I need to add the Administrative Templates (ADMX) files for each type of OS?

No. Just the latest polices for Windows Server 2016 and Windows 10 (v1703).
