Windows 10 Image creation

Afternoon all,

 

I am losing my mind now with Windows 10. It just seems determined to beat me down! I'm a day or two away from calling it a day and sticking to 7.

 

I use MDT deployment, so i have been creating an "golden image" which consists of;

 

- Windows 10 Education (1703)

- Silverlight

- All windows updates

- I have used the popular windows 10 decrappifier script to remove all the apps i dont want. It leaves the store app and calculator app only. ( https://community.spiceworks.com/scripts/show/3977-windows-10-decrapifier-version-2 )

- I then sysprep the image (Which takes about 20 minutes for some reason)

 

However It seems that even when i repeat the same steps every time i get a random outcome when i then deploy the image!

 

First issue: It seemed i got some text missing. Icons were showing with no text below them. - After a bit of research it appeared that i had to go into control panel for fonts and click download all fonts for this language.

 

So i created the same image, but with the fonts this time.

 

Problem no2 - Sysprep now wont complete. just crashes.

 

- Re-create the image again, same steps. Now syspreps.

 

Problem no3 - Now when it images, the machines just hang on "getting ready" and doesnt complete.

 

I have done some basic searching and from what i can gather, it is because i removed the apps. which means that windows 10 can't auto provision them anymore, which causes the startup to hang.

 

All i want to do, is create a windows 10 image that doesnt have the crap that kids will just play around with!?

 

I have always been one who wants to push new technology and platforms, but this windows 10 is really beating me!

 

Anyone got any ideas?

From the looks of it, I would guess that using the script from spiceworks may not work with a Sysprep, and you may be better removing the apps from the .wim file using powershell

What with the Cumulative Rollups and regular releases there's not that many updates for MDT to catch up on and building from the clean media seems to be easiest in terms of updating as new versions of Win10 get released.

thats what im doing as well now

 

i have in the past if ive wanted to create a "gold image" used dism to strip apps out if the initial install.wim then installed that to the vm im using to make my image then update install office etc then capture. if you try and remove apps from a captured image it dosent seem to work/work well

Yeah I ditched the build and capture for a straight deployment from a modified .wim (apps removed via dism).

I have just tried that now, and it does work by removing the apps via DISM. However the issue i have now is, the user gets all the apps with weird writing on the start menu!

I am planning to stick to being a version behind the current. I figure that by the time they release a new version the previous version should be just about usable :S

Seriously, I don't know how I live without those tools.

 

I use NTLite to customize services and components, strip out unwanted apps, integrate updates (from WHDownloader), integrate regkeys... I could go on.

 

Dump the WIM into SCCM or MDT, deploy. No SysPrep, no golden image building, no fuss.

 

I install all core apps during a task sequence for new builds.

 

Best thing with NTLite, whenever a new WIM comes out, import it, load up your saved session, hit apply and all your changes are immediately applied to that WIM.

 

Did it Wednesday. Needed to create an x86 image for some cheap tablets. Downloaded from the VLSC, imported into NTLite, imported my x64 session and hit apply. Took longer to download the WIM than it did to customize it for deployment.

We use WDS and having same problem. Is there any other way I can creat a W10 image, sysprep and customise start menu i.e home folder, browser, printer etc for all users without using GPO

Cant say I have any issue with the auto login.

 

On SCCM my build gets stuck on the OOBE (Just wait a moment...) due to radical changes to the OOBE in 1703 (Cortana). I fixed this by attaching an unattended.xml to the SCCM Task Sequence to skip the OOBE completely.

 

I haven't done this on my MDT builds, as it starts the OOBE and auto completes as it should, then logs in.

 

You could try adding to skip the OOBE in your MDT rules? See if that helps?

I will give the Nlite package ago. I have it installed now, just trying to work out what i should actually remove! Anyone got any guides / tips? If not ill use intuition!

Give me time and ill upload my config session. That can be imported and then you/people can go from there? I can always attach my reg keys and such too that I integrate.

 

EDIT: Ive added the regkeys I integrate. Although I have noticed, the File Explorer default destination is now an option in NTLite. It wasn't before when I created the key.

However I found a couple apps that were not in my script, I don't know if they will cause issue so I'm interested to know what others have done too.

Microsoft.Advertising.Xaml
Microsoft.StorePurchaseApp
Microsoft.Wallet

 

I'm not sure what these do so time will tell.

Safe to remove. Only used in apps that support in-app purchases; which is never going to be used on a school device.

Is this https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-US/library/mt125365(v=msads.100).aspx . The Advertising SDK (For Ads inside apps). Safe to remove.
