Other SEN techs

Im curious to know how many other techs here work in the SEN field and if so what do you like/dislike about the SEN area and education?

I worked as 1/2nd line support at a specialist college for 6 years but then moved back into mainstream education about 2 years ago. I'm now using a lot of what I learnt there to support more complex pupil needs within mainstream education. It's really great when you can help a student access something that without I.T. they wouldn't normally be able to.

i find it really rewarding but there are times when i get stressed due to red tape and teacher attitudes when my primary focus is providing support to the pupils

I worked in PRUs for 10 years, now in a ASD school, quite nice having so few people, although I do miss playing with the high end kit.

 

I don't really find red tape, just lack of money. "Why don't we have computers that can play good games?" -- "Because some of you keep smashing stuff and it costs money to fix"

I find the fact that its a smaller school environment means I know all the pupils and it feels more like a community.

 

It can be tough to see some of the things they have to endure at times.

 

Its also interesting to get to investigate what tech is available to make their lives easier.

We are getting this a lot at the moment, kids keep breaking things and teachers think that tech grows on trees that and then staff thinking that buying ipads costs peanuts and getting shirty when we say no because they cost £400

I must be quite lucky. I've been here 3 years and only one piece of equipment (an old monitor) has been damaged by a pupil.

You can get some pretty tough cases for ipads.

 

There's lots of ways to remind people of cause and effect, have a reverse thermometer/totaliser, "money remaining to buy new cool stuff", and then erase parts of it as people break stuff

we have otter boxes for them but they didn't help when the ipad screen caught the edge of something, £90 to get the screen repaired!!

i love the idea of that reverse thermometer.
