System state and Files backup

I need a piece of software which will backup my files and the system state, can any one recommend anything? For home use.

Give us a clue... what operating system are you running?

If you're running Windows 2000/XP/2003/Vista/2008 use NT Backup.

 

Start > Run, type ntbackup and press enter.

 

You can backup to File, External Hard Drive or Tape

Acronis makes some great personal backup software, especially good for imaging systems.

I agree with michael... use ntbackup and save it to an external drive or something.

I use Backupexec - [ although I am not a fan of it ] but I also use NT Backup to take system state snapshots and hold them on a NAS box. A sort of belts and braces approach !! If its of any use this is the command which I have stuck in a .CMD file which is scheduled..

Obviously you will have to edit it to your requirements but it should give you a heads up....

Stuff the software approach - for home use I have a Stardom RAID 1 box. Taking a backup simply involves yanking a harddrive out and storing it in my firesafe. The RAID rebuilds itself when you stick a replacement drive in. See:

At home on XP, I backup to external hard drive - but only data, including the Outlook pst. I also backup my Favorites folder as it was dead annoying that I lost it when I last had an HDD failure at home!

 

I work on the theory that should I have to do a full restore, I'd always install from scratch. I wouldn't muck about with system state, etc on an XP box.
