On my test domain why do I need to disable ip6 for clients to connect

I have just setup a test server / network and was pulling my hair out trying to workout why none of my test client desktops would join my new domain. I finally worked out that if I disabled ip6 on the clients adapter settings it would join my test domain just fine.

 

My test DC server has DNS and DHCP setup so I am assuming its one of these that is the issue.

 

Any idea what I have not configured correctly?

Do you have an IPv6 zone configured within DNS?

I have just noticed that IPv6 is not enabled on our live school server and the adapter / ipv6 is disabled.

 

Whats the process for getting a real IPv6 address, is it similar to ipv4 and I should contact our our LA and request a range?

IPv6 should be enabled on all Server 2008 and on DCs - AD can be very funny and slow without it. Only needs its localhost address but must be enabled.

You don't really need to assign it anything if you don't have a range, it'll just auto assign an address and localhost will respond too. I don't have any IPv6 configuration in place other than having it enabled.

OK going to take a punt on this one and say that I should enter

Subnet prefix - ????????

Default Gateway - fe80::9221:6ff:fe24:367c%12

 

So is that correct? how would I workout the subnet prefix?

 

Would it be better generating my IPv6 number from a site like this? - Private IPv6 address range

OK so you just have it set to auto

 

Do you have ipv6 setup in dhcp for clients?

Do you have ipv6 zone in dns?

 

its just in my OP I do have ipv6 enabled on the adapter but was having problems joining clients to the network unless I disabled ipv6 on the client. Others suggested I need ipv6 dhcp and dns zone but I would assume I need a static ip setup first, is this not the case?

idiot that I am, just realized the router my test server is connecting to is handing out ipv6 addresses. Unfortunately I just wiped my test server, so will need to re build, but 99% sure that will be why my client could not join my test network.

Did you have a IPv4 default gateway? At #6 post the ipconfig result did not have a IPv4 default gateway.

Anyway, I rebuilt my test server, left ipv6 enabled and everything worked as expected.
