basic question about dhcp setup

Just setting up a test domain and have a question about dhcp.

 

On all my live domains that I took over from the LA they have the IP range starting at xx.xx.xx.25 and have servers and static ip's within the first 1 - 25 range.

 

Now I always thought you should set the ip range to be the entire range so starting at xx.xx.xx.1 (not starting at 25) and then after that setting and exclusions range so blanking off 1 - 25 from being handed out.

 

Both methods seem to work fine, is there a preferred way?

I have VLANs so i don't really use exclusions. If it was a flat network like your, you maybe better using exclusions.

I'd always start DHCP at the first available and then exclude for static assignments etc. Printers I'd set a DHCP reservation and then a static on the printer itself.

When setting up dhcp the first page asks for the range of ips. The LA start the range at 25 which gives them 1 to 25 that cant be handed out to clients, but the second page asks for exclusive ranges which implies that on page one you should not start the range at 25 but start the range at 1 and then on page 2 set an exclusion from 1 to 25.

 

Not sure that explains it any better, sorry

 

EDIT - so should I start my range at 1 or 25?

No prob, I would guess many people would do this. It would be easier to do this when creating scope at the beginning. Exclusions could always be added later or if they are printers just set reservations.

I don't think there is a right or wrong way to do it, either would work.
