Right, seems im falling at the first hurdle.

After fixing my no common CD-Rom driver probs etc it now gets to the scanning disks part of the install and just stops at 36% every time.

Im trying with a different HDD to see if that fixes it, anyone else got any tips?

Thanks

Odd sounding problem. Can you try with a different CDROM drive? Could it be the cable/connection between your CDROM drive and the motherboard (are the harddrive and CDROM on the same ATA cable)?

I suspect acpi or a dma issue. Have you looked in the console for errors while the ubuntu setup is booting (Ctrl-Alt-F1 to F12 are the various consoles).

Sounds like an ACPI problem. Check for bios updates. Failing that, use the following boot options:

acpi=off ide=nodma noapic

This will have a considerable performance hit though.

Thanks Geoff, where exactly do I use the said boot option? :p

Even with the above code it still constantly gives the hda - lost interrupt error.

Is there a distro that will just install like windows and does what I need? Im starting to run out of time with this :(

Quite a regular occurrence I'm afraid. Manufacturers test their products against Windows. They do not test them against Linux. Windows is slightly lax in some areas where it comes to hardware standards. Linux isn't.

Can you give me a make/model number?

actually on closer inspection its a combo daughter board with lan/gfx/ide and the only reference numbers on it are Compaq J1085 or WS15MP4749.

Aida32 says it has a -

Compaq-Integrated CMD PCI-0649 Ultra-ATA/100 Dual Channel IDE Controller

Hope thats of some use to you?

Thanks again
