Windows 10 Printer Disappearing

Hello,

 

Has anyone else had issues with printers disappearing in Windows 10 please? Every now and then the deployed printer will disappear. If you reboot the computer it comes back again.

 

It is really hard to troubleshoot as it doesn't happen very often.

 

Any comments would be helpful.

Just to add, the printer is deployed with group policy as a computer policy, not a user policy.

They disappear or they are shown offline? If offline sure the problem is SNMP status Enabled

It just completely disappears.

 

There are logs in the event viewer either. Also updating the drivers didn't help.

Check the GPO is in create option and no other GPO messing around with a delete all option enabled

Just spotted this in the logs

 

Group Policy was unable to add per computer connection \\server\MFD Printer. Error code 0x57. This can occur if the name of the printer connection is incorrect, or if the print spooler cannot contact the print server.

We are having problems with Windows 10 machines and deployed printers too. I will look through the logs next time it gets reported to see if we see anything similar

Do you have the "Set Driver Isolation" in Isolated option? Because if it is not in Isolated it may cause problem with the spooler

I have set driver isolation and it doesn't make a difference im afraid.

Which version of Windows 10 are you running? We have been having this problem for a while now on 1511.

 

I have manually created the printer connection through GPO rather than just deploying it and that seems to have helped but it certainly hasn't fixed the problem.

 

I'm wondering if 1607 will fix it when I deploy that, it has stopped happening for our staff who are on 1607.

Printer mappings is basically my sole windows 10 issue right now.

 

First off have you set the registry key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows

LegacyDefaultPrinterMode

to be on? (1)

 

Secondly if you go into event viewer > security and look through there should be a moment where group policy starts its refresh, then right after that you should see one regarding the spooler service and a reference to your printer driver. This appears to be where mine fails. Regardless of how many times the printer has been used successfully in the past, the printer still randomly disappears and it always seems to be when group policies do a background refresh and attempts to reapply the driver or something to that affect. I've even tried turning off background refresh of group policy for logged on users but that didn't resolve it.

Only other thing i wonder about is what the printer name is mapping as?

 

point and print group policy settings asks for the FQDN of the servers used for P+P. In the past i've always mapped \\servername\printername presumably these would need to be \\servername.domain.com\printername to match what's in the P+P server list? Can anyone confirm that?

The problem as come back, this is really frustrating! I even rebuilt the print server and upgraded to 2016 and it didn't make a difference.

I know this is an old post i have resurrected but we are getting the same issue on our Windows 10 1803 (Windows 7 PC are fine) deploying our uni flow printer via GP did this ever get a fix.
