Any photographers advice on new camera?

So I've currently got a Nikon D3100 which I've had for about 4 years. With the 18-55 lens and a Tamron 70-300 lens.

 

I'm considering upgrading the body. Over the years my interest in photography has increased and it's quite a hobby now.

 

However, would I be better to upgrade the body, or to buy a new lens or two, and if so, which would be a good way to expand my lens selection?

 

I take photos of a lot of different things from nature to lots of scenes with people in.

 

I'd love some advice from the people who know best!

Heh, you can ignore this then. Personally, unless you know you need some feature that a particular body provides, I'd invest in glass. One idea; a nice prime lens will force you to think a bit more about composition and position and should produce extremely good quality images.

I'm not into photography as much as I used to be, but a few years ago the mantra seemed to be that the lenses were the place to spend your cash.

 

You can take great photos on a more limited body with quality glass, but the best body will always produce mediocre photos with inferior glass.

 

I guess it comes down to whether you yearn for more megapixels, or if the newer body has features that you want.

I would agree that some more lenses, BUT go for fixed focal length rather than Zoom. You will have better lens quality and wider aperture setting allowing you to explore and exploit the depth-of-field that such a range will give.

 

I would plump for (in full frame 35mm equiv) a 25mm or 35mm wide angle, and a 135mm telephoto (excellent for portraits). I would also go for a decent lense with proper macro functionality for extreme close ups.

 

A decent off-camera flash unit with a movable head to use bounce/indirect lighting and a decent tripod wouldnt go amiss.

 

Check out ebay as there always seems to be plenty of gear on there.

As a Pro photographer outside by IT work it's always best to invest in glass than bodies!

 

Glass investment will last longer than a body. It doesn't matter how many megapixels a camera has, it will not improve your images. You need to learn the basics of photography and the exposure triangle!

 

Only update your camera if you really need features such as speed for sports, or low light capabilities.
