CC4 Windows 10 - Who has made the full site move?

Hello Guys,

 

I am thinking of in the summer holidays taking the site to Windows 10. All of our hardware supports Windows 10, including the UEFI boot as we purchase all our computers through Stone, and I was wondering who has already made the move from Windows 7 to Windows 10 Education on a CC4 network.

 

For those that have, did you run into any issues and how did you get around them?

 

I have created a couple of test Windows 10 machines, on the CC4 network and they seem to work fine. Tested the Adobe suites, Microsoft Office and the other bits of software that we use.

We're working on it at the moment. We've installed the CC4 anniversary release 1607. Most of the main bits we tried worked. We're having a problem with Autograph - should be the latest version, can't check the version number as not in the office. It basically doesn't load correctly under a student/staff account. Totally fine under an admin account or with raised credentials.

 

I've seen a few oddities with the background image not being displayed correctly on the room I've built or disappearing then reappearing. That tends to happen after the machine has been sleeping/hibernating though. Seen a few black screen logins too.

 

I think we'll basically be in the same boat as you looking to move fully over the summer. We'll be trialling with early adopters pre-summer. I suspect we've got some old software that will keep a room or two on Windows 7 though.

We're 300 machines into a 700 PC migration on CC4. We where part of the 1607 field trial so began rolling 1607 out back in February. We've had no major issues and everything seems to work. We've rebuilt the first student rooms over Easter x3 so we'll see how that goes!

 

Autograph there are some DLL files you have to copy into Program files and this got it working for us - Details on the Autograph site i believe.

I can't say I have used autograph, so unfortunately I can't comment. But I can imagine I am going to run into some problems very similuar due to some of the software we still use that was designed for Windows 2000!

 

We have approx 1200 machines, and 5 IT rooms. I am thinking of keeping at least 1 IT rooms as Windows 7. Due to run into any problems with user profiles with you using a mixed environment of Windows 7 and Windows 10?

I think Windows 10 will confuse allot of our users, as some still struggle with Windows 7 which we have being running for 5 years. I do like the CC4 login screen on Windows 10, I think it looks very smart compared to the traditional Windows Login Screen, I am just not that keen on the Start Menu, but I think if I look into creating a custom start menu, I can sort that out.

Ah, sill me. I have just read NWS5448877 from the RM Support website, and they have stopped making WIM images for Windows 10 Professional as they don't think its educational focused.

 

Explains why the only build template I now have is Windows 10 Education.

We've got some older software dotted about - 2D design v2 which is keeping us stuck on 32bit Win7 in one room. Profiles as far as I can tell are okay but you'll need to reset all the user profiles to get the latest .V6(?) profiles. Bit of a gotcha for us as it annoys our staff.

Sorry just spotted this. Yeah I've given this a go from their page, but no joy unfortunately. Same results. RM seemed to think it was linked to how the software interacts with the roaming profiles.

Hmm, Well thats funny because 2D Design V2 was one of the first packages I tested, and it works absolutely fine on Windows 10 and Windows 7 x64 for us?

 

Is this your own package for 2D Design V2, or the RM package?

Sorry, numpty-ism at its finest. Not 2D Design it's PCB Wizard we were having troubles with. 2D design we just had to recreate the shortcuts.

It's just the cost of going up to the latest and greatest. Must admit I love using the Windows 10 build on my work desktop but it's just a shame that it's anniversary at work and creators at home!

We just disabled the 'TILE' part of the start menu by pushing out a Blank XML file and forcing people to use the standard scroll bar style start menu which is very similar to Windows 7 and no one has asked where it is! Currently you can ONLY do an XML file with native Windows apps so maps, calculator etc which isn't much use as most people are going to want to Pin Chrome, Office etc which are the commonly used applications. Hopefully they are going to fix this in the creators update.

 

Yes profile resets are a pain but it's sometimes good to have a clear out! We have re-directed staff desktops to a 'Desktop' folder in their N Drive and changed the re-direction to solve the problem of them losing everything on their desktop everytime we needed to do a reset obviously they still loose shortcuts and pinned taskbar icons but not alot you can do about this unfortunately.

We are also moving to ue-v so no profiles.

We're pretty much stuck on Win 7 at the moment due to old software such as Autograph, 2D Design etc however we've come to the conclusion that we'll have to find alternate software as I'm pretty sure 2D Design hasn't been updated in over 10 years?

We have both Autograph and 2D Design running on Windows 10 but agree 2D design hasn't been upgraded in years!

We have started rolloing it to admin areas that don't require curriculum software. I was guessing that I could use a virtual pc for 32 (and 16)bit software I couldn't run directly. Intend to replace some PCs in staff room for teachers to check for problems...

Dean was there anything in particular you had to do to get Autograph going on Windows 10? We've just upgraded to Win10 1607 Connect on Prem and I cannot get Autograph to start up but just hangs as a system process.

 

Any tips you could offer would be greatly appreciated.

We don't use RM but when we went from Win 10 1511 to 1607 Autograph stopped working, following the instructions on this link fixed it for us:

While I would agree Windows 10 "looks" different...its pretty much the same...click the start menu...open all programs...find the folder you want...etc...

 

And Windows 10 has been around for ages now - both on new PCs purchased...and those taking advantage or free upgrades from Win 8 and 8.1..

 

..or rather getting upgraded whether they wanted it or not....

 

I think Edge works nicely - and I don't think I have said that previously about any Microsoft browser....

 

It is a bit more greedy on resources - running as 64bit ...if you previously used 32bit Win7....and can be tight in 2GB by the time you have applications open.

 

Yes - we have had some whinges from some corners...but after ten minutes or so they realise its just the same.....About half way through doing staff computers....will do student computers next term.

Our new computers are all Windows 10 CC4 with UEFI BIOS.

 

Old ones will be upgraded first, before installing Windows 10 but will only be with Legacy BIOS but Windows 10 CC4 too.

 

No major issues at current, except issues with WoL and the older kit.
