Pyroman Posted March 5, 2008 Posted March 5, 2008 Okay, one of our staff has donated a laptop to school, not a great piece of kit, a Toshiba satellite 2410-603 15"TFT / 30Gb HDD / P4 / 256MbRAM now one of the SMT want it for their daughter who's going abroad and have offered to pay for it as it was donated to school. Question is how much do i tell them it's worth? can't get onto e-bay here to see how much they normally go for and all shopping sites show reviews and prices from 2004/5ish Help!
ICT_GUY Posted March 5, 2008 Posted March 5, 2008 Top Price £200, Fair price £100 - £150. Based on the fact that you can buy brand new ASUS laptops from ASDA for £299 that are of higher spec and come with a warranty.
OutToLunch Posted March 5, 2008 Posted March 5, 2008 Toshiba's are lovely laptops but I wouldn't expect more than £200-220 for it, maybe £250 if there was a last minute bidding war and the buyer doesn't realise you can get a brand new laptop for just over £300...
cookie_monster Posted March 5, 2008 Posted March 5, 2008 Well with this spec available with warranty for £299 i'd say not much over £100-£150. http://direct.tesco.com/q/R.203-6392.aspx
DMcCoy Posted March 5, 2008 Posted March 5, 2008 It's *really* old. I have a similar spec compaq that must be 6 years old now. Isn't selling donations a bit iffy?
OutToLunch Posted March 5, 2008 Posted March 5, 2008 Laptops are still surprisingly expensive though on Ebay - I think a lot of non techy people assume that they will get a bargain just because it's an auction and bid accordingly, not necessarily knowing what the real world prices are like if you know where to look. What it's worth and what it would sell for aren't necessarily the same thing... Why not give the laptop back to the member of staff and ask them to arrange to sell it privately to the member of SMT? Save yourself the hassle and the red face when they ask what happened to it...
fafster Posted March 5, 2008 Posted March 5, 2008 How about a donation to the school of £100 and they get to keep the laptop...?
Joanne Posted March 5, 2008 Posted March 5, 2008 how about they buy a new laptop for the daughter? She may as well buy one in the country she is going to then there are no nasty voltage mixing. Use the laptop you got given in the school.
Guest Guest Posted March 5, 2008 Posted March 5, 2008 I wouldnt pay more than £100 for it. No good comparing it to ebay as the average IQ of an eBayer is getting lower by the second, why oh why would you pay more for something 2nd hand than what you would in a shop?
FN-GM Posted March 5, 2008 Posted March 5, 2008 We throw laptops out or break them down for parts at that kind of spec, just ask for a donation of £50 or something.
tech_guy Posted March 5, 2008 Posted March 5, 2008 Ask for £150 and then go spend it on beer, pizza and loose women......
Michael Posted March 5, 2008 Posted March 5, 2008 I wouldn't pay anymore than £60 for it. I feel some of the prices quoted above are way too much.
torledo Posted March 5, 2008 Posted March 5, 2008 (edited) I wouldn't pay anymore than £60 for it. I feel some of the prices quoted above are way too much. ....those who would value it at 150-200 are off their rocker...what do they think it is ? a 14inch ibook G3 or something. it definitely wouldn't be worth more than 100 for a spec of 256meg of ram and 30gig hard drive. The reason i say 100 absolute maximum is that we have some celeron satellite A40's that were purchased around that period that still do a great job, and the screen is really nice - trouble is no wifi of any description and a wee bit on the bulky side. Otherwise great for most tasks....although i personally think they're not worth more than 70, infact i'll change my mind and say top price of 80 for the P4's. Can you tell i'm not a great ebay buyer ;0) Edited March 5, 2008 by torledo
enjay Posted March 6, 2008 Posted March 6, 2008 With only 256MB, I'd tell them their daughter doesn't actually want it, and will likely replace it in a year (unless their daughter is about 8yrs old and wants something to play Barbie Princess games on). If they are intent on buying it, ask for £50-75 to charity (keeping the money for the school could cause issues in terms of finance and electrical safety laws, not sure - thinking out loud there).
mrtechsystems Posted March 6, 2008 Posted March 6, 2008 Donation to the school 75.00 pounds no warranty
OutToLunch Posted March 6, 2008 Posted March 6, 2008 ....those who would value it at 150-200 are off their rocker...what do they think it is ? a 14inch ibook G3 or something. The OP's question was more how much would it go for on Ebay, not "how much is it worth to IT staff who know the true value of it"... I wouldn't value it at £200 but I'd still expect it to make close to that on Ebay because most people are clueless. The SMT seems to be thinking "Ooh, free laptop!" because it's been donated - where they should be expected to pay the same as they would if they sat down in front of Ebay and used their own skills to try and find one. Even crappy sub 1GHz P3's laptops regularly go for £100-120 on Ebay if you have a look. Hence the £150-200 figure...
Pyroman Posted March 7, 2008 Author Posted March 7, 2008 Cheers everyone, i'll post back and tell you the agreed price next week when she comes to get it. The SMT seems to be thinking "Ooh, free laptop!" because it's been donated That does seem to be the case tbh but don't wanna get into an argument over it with them.
