Google Drive Migration

We are moving from an LEA run Gmail service, to our own Google Apps for Education account.

 

Yesterday, I ran the migration tool for schools, https://takeout.google.com/transfer?pli=1, for each of our staff. The emails appear to have mostly copied across but very little of the google drive has, however, a few documents have copied which suggests the permissions are ok to allow drive documents to be copied.

 

Has anyone else experienced this?

 

I also have access to a migration tool from within the Admin panel of our new GAFE account, but that only appears to do the email and not the drive. We use the drive extensively so there is a lot of data to transfer.

 

Has anyone else made this move, and had any success in migrating the drive? I'm trying to avoid a mass download/ upload as it converts everything back to Word/Excel format but will do that as a last resort.

Do you have lots of shared documents in your drives?

 

The big problem with shared documents in Drive is that they only remain under to control of the owner. So if you have shared folders etc, this will not transfer with takeout or migration tools, each document will only migrate with the Drive of the document owner, and sharing etc will be lost.

 

It is a royal pain!

We do, but I also have a lot of personally owned documents which haven't migrated either.

I just had a quick Google... Seems like a right total PITA!

 

One thing I came across on a related page (https://support.google.com/accounts/answer/6386856) was this really helpful statement:

 

"The copy process usually happens within a few hours, but it can take up to a week."

I did see that, but I first tried last Tuesday, and have had an email back from Google saying it has completed.

So I don't really believe anything else is going to get copied across at this stage.

So you're moving from an LEA Google Domain to your own Google Domain? Is this correct? the migration tools are as you said mainly around e-mail etc but there is a script available that you can use to migrate individual drives. https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/drive-migration-by-wizkid/kiedoeackeoedpkkognggfcnnjdmeepe

 

Where these apps/scripts fail is if the Owner of said file has disabled the ability for collaborators to re-share the document, i'm not one to complain about this as its a nice fail safe to have on sensitive data that needs to remain in the hands of the right people.

I know this thread is pretty old but I'm apparently way behind in life and am now moving from a GMail service to Google Apps for Education. The migration tool Google Admin give you is fantastic at moving all emails from one account to another, however I can't seem to migrate Google Drive or Team Drives? Has anyone been successful with this?

 

I work in an educational environment so hoping there might be other IT Techs out there who can help.

There does seem to be a lack of migration tools for drive. Google have purchased a company that sells the migration tools and plans to put them in G Suite for free. Until then we are stuck.

Top tip. Don't try to replicate a shared drive in google drive. Split up data into team drives. Also would recommend staff move their own files.

Thanks Mark, it's brilliant to get feedback from others who are doing or have done this in education. So far teachers are wanting to share their folders and everything they have from their old email address to their new one. I suppose this is one option but once their old email address expires they won't have access to their files anymore.

 

If I could migrate drives easily I think it would save a lot of work. A few people have said to force the teachers to download and re-upload everything in order to get them to house keep their files.

If you create a Team drive in your new account and add your old account as a team member. You can then move your old documents into it, so far this appears to work but you can't move a whole folder you have to do it document by document.

The team drive is owned by the new account and so is everything moved into it.

 

 

I used takeout to Download everything and it was a mess. The downloads are not in a logical folder structure. I wouldn't recommend.

 

I have been told the app works well. Use the app to copy your folder structure onto your pc, then login to new account and it will reupload to new account. But I think shared documents will be uploaded by everyone so you will get duplicates.
