[android] How to mirror an android screen through a laptop to a projector?

Hi All,

 

Does anyone use an android tablet for this purpose?

 

We have a situation where the Head has requested that at any given moment a teacher must be able to show an example of a pupil's work to the whole class.

 

We have Airserver on the teacher laptops that could enable iPads to be used for this, but the teachers do not have iPads.

 

To make it more complicated, the pupil iPads that we do have are on a seperate VLAN and wireless network to the teacher laptops running Airserver. This means that I cannot get them to communicate with each other.

 

We do have some super cheap and old (Jellybean?) Android tablets that could be used, so I'm looking for a (hopefully free) app that could mirror the android screen on to a laptop. Hopefully not full of ads, nagware etc.

We use Miracast and Chromecast which comes included with AirServer licenses now to cast Android devices to screens. I haven't tried it with Jellybean tablets but if they support screen cast then it may be worth a try.

Depending on projector could you plugin a Chromecast into the HDMI port? Then just cast and away you go.

I'm not very up on my 'casting' technologies I'm afraid. But going from this on the link:

 

Android Compatible

Works with all Miracast and Google Cast enabled Android devices without needing to install anything on the device.

 

I'm not sure our ancient devices are 'enabled'. I will have to dig one out and see what options there are on them.

OK, that's fine but that's not what I'm asking.

 

If I were to join a device to the student WLAN, would I able to access resources hosted on other parts of your network? Or would I just be able to get out onto the internet?

Ah yes, they can access resources on the network.

 

Printers, home drives, etc.

If that's the case, you might be able to put a Bonjour gateway in then. That will advertise any device that's sitting in one VLAN to another.

Not sure what flavour of Windows you use, but it's probably worth mentioning that Miracast doesn't work on Airserver on Windows 7 (you need 8.1 or 10).
