Hi,

I have been using Meraki MDM with a few ipads but stupidly allowed staff to use their own icloud account. A staff member left and it stuck on Activation Lock after I tried recovery mode.

Is it right I can go to a Apple store with proof of purchase and they will help?

I've seen stuff about using software to fool the DNS so it unlocks on a dodgy site but don't trust them.... havent read up enough about jailbreaking to look into that either.

My fault entirely...just stuck.

I've done it by contacting Apple - had to email them proof of ownership but they were then able to unlink the device from the icloud account allowing it be recovered

Apple can remove the activation lock with proof of purchase. I've always put a request in with our support company who have forwarded the request on to Apple on my behalf. You may be able to contact them online rather than take it so an Apple store as they don't need the device to remove the lock, just the serial number.

They do prefer the serial number to be on the proof of purchase, but I've still managed to get a couple removed without it.

In the past when this happened to me, I asked our HR person to send them an email containing simple instructions for removing a device from their iCloud account - something like the following:

- log in to http://www.icloud.com

- click on X at the top

- find and click delete

- please reply when this is done

Then we said that if they did not confirm that this was done within 30 days we would consider pursuing legal action, as they have left school property unusable by others (tantamount to vandalism or something, I just know that they had to return all school equipment in the state that it was given to them according to their contract).

Although I don't know if this will clear the Activation Lock, the instructions I got were for removing a device from their iCloud account so we could wipe it, but it had no passcode on or anything... Good luck getting it sorted!

Apple can do this. You no longer need to provide proof of ownership if the iPad is in DEP.

Whilst Apple may relent and do this if the device is in DEP for you, do not expect any reseller to be in a position to do this on your behalf, you should have a system in place e.g. an MDM which allows you to remove activation lock.

That's fine if the device has wifi access - our students have to authenticate to wifi every morning, which thus means we can't remove the lock on any device that's not been in use for the last 8 hours.

If your MDM is configured correctly it will remove activation lock when the device is next connected to any public wifi, and of course you can get the student to to manually remove the device via iCloud.
