Have generally avoided managing mobile devices until now (except ipads - for which we use Apple's own profile Manager and MDM stuff)

Thought I'd use Google G suite - but the Android devices are Kit Kat - and that is apparently not supported.

Looked at Spice works - but the "free" stuff doesn't seem to do the useful stuff.....which seems to be true for other free offerings.

Perhaps we just need to bite the bullet and pay for Meraki MDM?

It depends how many devices you had, MangeEngine have a free one for upto 5 devices.

You could also try Comodo MDM however I haven't quite got my head around how that is provisioned/managed or whether it's just a profile. However after signing up a helpful person contacted me a week/two later to ask if they could show me some more features - as it was ipads and they don't support DEP yet I declined however it may be worth looking at?

Anyone know the pricing for Meraki? Only need it for 25 ipads.

I was quoted somewhere between £6-7 per device per year. That was a 3 year deal.

It worked around < £6 each on a 5 year deal.

Anyone else using anything else? There's a whole list of them - Jamf, Sophos, AirWatch etc...

I've been happily using the 100 free device license with Meraki, but as we're now trying to do things across the trust, we need a paid for solution as we've got a few hundred iPads to deal with, and more coming soon.

I'm using Lightspeed MDM, think that retails at £5 pa. I get it free with county though.

It's fast! Change a setting on the console and you turn round to look at the iPad and it's been deployed. Took me a while to get used to it after using Meraki for so long though.

I take it all these need the devices to be managed to fully use the features? I dont have a Mac in school so have just used Meraki to partially manage them.

DEP isnt available but have signed up for Apple School Manager.

I use Lightspeed MDM and we pay £5.00 per device. We currently manager just over 300 iPads within a set of trust primary schools and I'm reasonably happy with it, I wouldn't move away from it.

Thats another half hour of my life lost, it wont let me sign up for DEP, I only have the option for VPP. If I try and create a new account for DEP it says the email is already in use... even if I put [email protected].

I signed up for Zuludesk... only cost a few quid as they bill on the school year. Unfortunatley the juicy settings need the ipad in supervised mode.

Use apple school manager and you'll get access to the DEP: http://school.apple.com (You'll need to use Chrome on anything or a newish version of Safari on a Mac)

Edit: should have read that you'd already signed up for it, the DEP part is a section within there then you just configure it to point you DEP enrolled devices to your MDM server. It might take a day or 2 for it all to be approved and activated.

The reason it won't let you do this is because you already have a VPP account, in order to sign up for DEP you have go down the upgrade route, see below...

Where's the news that it's not longer free?

Thank you for your interest in Apple School Manager. Unfortunately, we were unable to approve your request for enrollment.

**** School is already enrolled in Apple Deployment Programs. Ask your institution’s Agent to upgrade your institution to Apple School Manager at school.apple.com.

2) This is Nefeli from Deployment Programs Support at Apple. We are following up with you regarding Apple School Manager sign-up ID

Your institution is already enrolled in the Device Enrollment Program or Volume Purchase Program, so you do not need to enroll separately in Apple School Manager. Your Apple Deployment Program agent can sign in to deploy.apple.com and upgrade to Apple School Manager. To avoid delays, two-step verification must be enabled on the agent account. For additional information on preparing to upgrade, go to https://support.apple.com/HT206590.

I have sent an email asking to be migrated to Apple School so I'm not sure if number 2 relates to that or is a follow on from number 1.

When i log into VPP it just gives me a list of the admins in school. No upgrade option or anything.

I had this issue. It's not very clear how to resolve it.

1) Log in to Apple DEP at deploy.apple.com (Form the correct URL yourself, or google it. I'm not your lackey! :D).

2) Configure two factor authentication. If you don't, you'll just be bounced at the Apple School Manager login with no feedback, which is not helpful at all.

3) Go back to the DEP homepage. In the bottom left corner is an "Upgrade account" button. Use that and follow the process to upgrade the account.

That last one is the where I was always getting caught up. Every other prompt to upgrade DEP to School Manager didn't seem to work.
