Hmmm....

I've got a scheduled task to create a backup of our SIMS and FMS DBs at regular intervals using Capita's DBAttach tool. Although our SIMS DB is ~3.5GB in size (large primary), it grows daily. Our FMS DB has remained stagnant at a specific # of bytes and hasn't changed for quite a while, despite many financial transactions being processed by our bursar. It's significantly smaller than the SIMS DB (which I guess is to be expected) but I'm a little paranoid still.

I'm due to do a 'dry run' restore soon but thought I'd ask to see if your FMS DB size has remained fairly stagnant too? Seems a bit odd to me.

Thanks

Capita gave me a tool to shrink the database but it was about 3 years ago, so probably best if I don't dig it out and share.

As ItsOggy has said, transaction logs and recovery mode would be places to look.

The growth settings of the actual database files is also useful. It could have been set to go up a certain amount or percentage, then after that growth it doesn't change, just fills up the space until it reaches a limit.

So it starts at 1GB, set to go up by 500MB, once it hits 1GB it will grow, then nothing until that extra 500MB is full. Plus there isn't a lot of volume taken up by financial transactions.
