Explosion at Flamanville nuclear plant in northern France

Meh, accidents happen all the time at power stations, or any place with lots of heavy machinery. So long as its nowhere near the nuclear part, its not really worth paying much attention to.

I think that it is worth paying attention to in terms of energy security given EDF building and running 3 new nuclear plants in the UK. The Flamanville reactor was turned off with a planned downtime of 4 days, this has now jumped to six weeks without explanation. It is estimated to be costing EDF between £1 million and £1.8 million a day. Closures last year cost EDF £1.8bn and is under financial pressure.

RTE (who operate the French grid) have already warned that there may be power cuts due to the level of nuclear shutdowns. Doesn't inspire confidence for our nuclear plans.

not really, accident no-where near anything radioactive.

Typical anti nuclear fearmongering from the guardian tbh

Right, because explosions at nuclear power plants are nothing to worry about.

Nothing is certain with Power Plants though, thats why there should always be spare capacity.

Wind is only good when its windy but not to windy! Also most people hate the look of turbines, apparently they are noisy as well.

Solar requires, well the sun, not much good for the UK.

Coal/ Oil/ Diesel are polluting massively.

Gas is cleaner then the above but still burning fossil fuels.

Tidal (seems to be good) but is untried and might effect other stuff we don't know about yet.

Alll of the above seem to be hated by Environmentalists for one reason or another.
