[fog] Sysprep, or no sysprep

Hello,

 

I've recently setup a FOG server for our school OS deployment, everything's working as it should, I've created my image, uploaded it to the server etc etc, my question is, to save time, do I need to sysprep my image or not, FOG still allows me to upload it to the server without preforming a sysprep.

 

Is it a good idea to sysprep, or not to sysprep?

I personally never used to when using older versions of windows 95/98/2000 and their are articles such as The SID debate: To Sysprep or not to Sysprep | InfoWorld which make interesting reading. I think it is deemed best practice now to though and since setting up MDT its always worked well.

We use FOG and always sysprep before uploading an image (and rearm Office). We also use the copyprofile option to configure the default profile to set the start menu in Windows 10 - works well. I think KMS activation will fail if you don't sysprep + no customised default profile.

i keep a un-syspreped image and a syspreped one on my fog server, i deploy the syspreped image and when i update my image i do that via the un-syspreped one first then re upload it and then resysprep it and up load that.

 

Syspreped image automates the end of the setup and we rearm office too just before we sysprep for KMS as well...

and with FOG 1.3 new client you need to disable it and then add some enable commands to the setupcomplete file to re-enable it.

Excellent, that's what I've done, kept a standard image, and not syspreped it, but then kept another image which has been syspreped, and is ready for deployment, I thought that was easier.

I am bit confused with how customise the default profile. For example I have a image which I ran the sysprep then captured it (win10). What I wanted to have are shortcuts on the desktop and set Acrobat reader as default for PDF etc.. how do I do this ? When I deploy I want every pc to have all the shortcuts I have crated and all the start up menu custom setting to be there . Any one could explain me in detail please ? Thanks

You need to boot into audit mode when first installing then run the copy profile command and then it keeps the settings mentioned above .

Never used sysprep in all the years I've been in IT. Whether it's because we don't use software that specifically requires it, but I've never had any network issues from not using it.

I create my image, re-arm office, re-arm windows, then shut down and acronis backup the image.

Image can be deployed in 7 mins, rename, add to network and PC up an running again.

Never used to sysprep with XP, but always have with 7 and up (we use FOG too). Just seems to do a better job, regenerating IDs etc. We do still have to regen the WSUS ID for each client using a startup script. I never generalise the sysprep though.
