synaesthesia Posted January 30, 2017 Posted January 30, 2017 As frowned upon as these are, sometimes needs are must. I have 30-60 cables in a school that need extending by about 3 meters. There is no possibility of re-cabling the lot due to building constraints and budget. The obvious solution are these: http://thumbs1.ebaystatic.com/d/l225/m/mvvj9yDNQOyXvRnOovO3e3g.jpg I can't however find anything similar to do bulk connections in this way though. Does such a thing exist?
Andrew_C Posted January 30, 2017 Posted January 30, 2017 (edited) Look for Krone panels. I'm sure you can get cheaper than RS, but for info. Edited January 30, 2017 by Andrew_C 1
FN-GM Posted January 30, 2017 Posted January 30, 2017 (edited) Look for Krone panels. I'm sure you can get cheaper than RS, but for info. That looks like its for telephone cabling. You should source ones that are for Cat 5 / 6. Besides that is quite expensive to say you will only get 2 cables in 1 panel. Edited January 30, 2017 by FN-GM
timbo343 Posted January 30, 2017 Posted January 30, 2017 FN-GM is right, thats for telephone boxes hence the prices. What about this.. https://bownetcms.co.uk/product/cat5e-inline-coupler-idc-punchdown/?gclid=Cj0KEQiA5bvEBRCM6vypnc7QgMkBEiQAUZftQKVQ8lPli_iuan3eGexB8YE6RS0WfZOvdGC5_18EDTwaApyL8P8HAQ Or matbe put some RJ45 ends on the cable and use.. http://www.toolstation.com/shop/Electrical/d190/Data+%26+Telecoms/sd2745/CAT5E+UTP+RJ45+Coupler/p89915 Either way you are looking for a coupler.
Fazza Posted January 30, 2017 Posted January 30, 2017 How about something like this: https://www.amazon.co.uk/1001Cables-Coupler-Connector-ethernet-straight/dp/B000HWXUIA
dry Posted January 30, 2017 Posted January 30, 2017 Bear in mind that if you're extending anything other than UTP cable, you'll need to buy a punchdown joiner relevant to the grade of cable you're working with (STP, FTP etc) in order to preserve anti-crosstalk properties of the cable- especially if the joins are near electrical cabling.
synaesthesia Posted January 30, 2017 Author Posted January 30, 2017 I won't be putting ends on, I have plenty of those couplers but that just looks awful. I have the relevant tools so that isn't a worry. I want something i can enclose in a box to keep it tidy
Gurtlush Posted January 30, 2017 Posted January 30, 2017 Last place i was in we used something similar to this. Then a standard patch panel with patch leads to the computers. Is was the neatest solution we came up with.
synaesthesia Posted January 30, 2017 Author Posted January 30, 2017 That's not a bad idea. One of my options is a standard patch panel mounted in a wooden box or something.
timbo343 Posted January 30, 2017 Posted January 30, 2017 That's not a bad idea. One of my options is a standard patch panel mounted in a wooden box or something. I did something similar to that when someone went through our 40 core phone cable. what a job that was. I ended up buying a BT extension box and mounted it on the wall with a few of those connector blocks. Managed to buy the, off ebay for next to nowt.
rob_coles Posted January 30, 2017 Posted January 30, 2017 HighBand Cat5e 8 pair UTP Module Strip and dp box like Matthew suggested. The modules just click in similar to telephones.
