Student Laptops in cabinets + Windows Updates

Is there a good way to manage this? What do other people do? Up until W10 we had them connecting to WSUS but found sometimes the updates would hold-up students logging in. We then tried taking WSUS off the laptops in term time and then updating them during holidays but this was a pain. Now with W10 a lot of updates are failing and are getting stuck in installing \ uninstalling loops making more laptops out of use when they are needed.

We had the same issues, plus pushing out applications. I never found a decent solution. In the end when we renewed we moved onto thin client laptops, fixed the issues. They have just been replaced with Chromebooks, purely because of they are cheaper. Both things work.

All of our Laptops are in a separate computer group within Wsus we only push updates out to these at the most convenient times. Normally holidays but then we check all our laptops at each break anyway. Currently can update and check 150 laptops in a day this way.
