school server support contract needed

we have a pure windows network (3k server and xp pcs), and we have no outside support at the moment and if something goes wrong on the server and i get stack in configuring etc I have no where to go to for help, we have been offered 50 hours support by a company for £1580, they will send us an engineer when there is a problem (2 hours will be charged for their travel) or they will remotely access the system. Is this price/deal reasonable, if you know a better way/cost of going about it, please let me know.

that is reasonable, depending on the level of engineer they will send. Best thing to do is get different quotes from companies. Compare price to service offered.

Stone Computers are offering a service like this - they flyered me the other week - can't remember the pricing though. We bought some support from Dataspire - 10 events for so much - which is OK as we only use it in emergencies.

Teksys do a similar thing. Last year it cost us £1300 for 3 servers which were a few years old.

imo that is not good value for you as you only have the one server that requires support at the moment. For an outlay of 2.5K - 3K you could get a brand new dell server that can function as DC and file server depending on you're space requirements, plus would be covered by 3yr hardware warranty.

 

I also believe most of the main server vendors are now offering Operating system support in addition at minimal cost so you'd get access to Windows server 'experts' to assist you in various server configuration problems. So based on what you can get from the likes of dell, for you're environment that figure you've been quoted is not good value.

Personally I think its good value as its better then none at all. I think the price is quite reasonable is that for hardware and software support?
