BassTech Posted January 9, 2017 Posted January 9, 2017 We have System Center 2012 R2 DPM which backs up up our servers to Azure. I'm struggling to find information on how to recover specific files/folders that users have deleted, all I can see is how to recover the entire server which I do not want to do. I'm currently looking in the Recovery section of the DPM console, but no joy - any help appreciated. I'm used to using Symantec Backup Exec so it's all a bit alien to be at the minute!
IrritableTech Posted January 9, 2017 Posted January 9, 2017 In the recovery section make sure the recoverable data is expanded and choose the domain, server and drive you are looking to recover from. Select the date and recovery time and use the path window to find the file or folder you are looking to recover. Right click or use the menu button to recover. It will show you the list of files and folders which you have selected in the wizard along with the date, time and source. Click next and you are asked whether you want to put it in its original location or somewhere else. Then you'll be asked whether you'd like to overwrite, make a copy or skip if it already exists. Check the security permissions and you should be good to go.
BassTech Posted January 9, 2017 Author Posted January 9, 2017 Doesn't seem to work, I think it might be because I'm trying to restore from the online backup, it won't let me browse any files or folders, seems to be all or nothing. I can browse ok when I select to restore from disk and choose specific files/folders, but the date I need to restore from is online only. I am now restoring the whole backup to a folder, then going to have to manually go in & get it I think, bit of a pain though as it's taking ages to recover from online, does anyone know a way around this?
win Posted January 9, 2017 Posted January 9, 2017 You need to be patient with online restores. It takes ages to bring up the files and folders available from online restore points Did you let it finish querying online recovery points?
robyholmes Posted January 9, 2017 Posted January 9, 2017 You should see the following on recovery: Once you've picked a data drive on the left hand side, the main content area will allow you to navigate the folder structure. Right click on a folder or file to recover it.

[ATTACH=CONFIG]40577[/ATTACH] Looking at that it looks like you've backed up a VM which is your file server? Is that right? Here I have a the agent installed on the file server itself so its listed on the left hand side. I guess your backup up the VHDX file which means you need to restore the full thing before browsing it.

[ATTACH=CONFIG]40577[/ATTACH] As you appear to be trying to get into a vm have you checked that the hyper-v role is installed on that dpm server? (mine lets me access the filesystem just by doubleclicking on the vhd - i'm all local though) Edited January 9, 2017 by Sagima

For this reason I installed the agent on the file server itself, then run a file backup rather than whole VM. Also means you can exclude some folders you don't want to backup (Such as apps you've copied from CD). Or as Sagima has suggested, maybe DPM will open the VHDX directly from the cloud storage without needing to download it if you have the Hyper-V role installed?

Bit annoying having to do that every time someone deletes something! vhdx item level restore was added with server 2012 and dpm 2012 sp1 I belive (checked and seems to be right). Turns out it doesn't work if you've deduped the virtual server though - which being a fileserver you might have done
