SQL Server Dilemma

I am hoping for some advice please. We currently have a Windows Server 2008R2 with SQL Server 2008 R2 SP1. My plan is to upgrade SQL to SP3 for the time being, but a bigger project is upgrading SQL Server altogether.

 

With the current Server OS, the most up to date SQL edition available to upgrade to would be SQL Server 2014. Is it wroth bypassing 2012 OR look to upgrading the server OS to 2012/2016 - then using the latest SQL 2016 edition?

 

My current thought is remain with 2008R2 and upgrade our SQL server to 2014. I appreciate any advice/thoughts in advance.

I assuming this must be a physical server.

 

If it was virtual then I'd take is as an opportunity to build a fresh server with the lastest SQL that you can and shift your databases accros to it.

You should check SQL Compatability / support matrix for your products, some may not support the newer version, yes you have DB Compatability modes within SQL but its always worth checking and talking to the vendors.
