Badaz52 Posted December 14, 2016 Posted December 14, 2016 Hi all, Just testing a windows 10 build 1607 education and edge keeps opening up on login every time its very annoying, how can I stop it?
Michael Posted December 14, 2016 Posted December 14, 2016 Never seen that happen before, unless you have a HTML or link to a page set to appear at Startup.
Badaz52 Posted December 14, 2016 Author Posted December 14, 2016 Fixed it its something called Activeprobing in the registry it seems to only affect things if you use roaming profiles. On a side note as a general thing how many people are using edge on their win 10 builds? have you disabled it completely? changed file associations?
disk Posted December 14, 2016 Posted December 14, 2016 We are leaving Edge enabled in our Windows 10 image and it is set as the default. We also provide a current version of Firefox as a secondary browser. Our users have not had any issues.
EvLPhenom Posted December 14, 2016 Posted December 14, 2016 I have Edge set as the default browser in my build but i have also installed Chrome for my staff users and the choice is down to them. Not had any issues so far.
Michael Posted December 14, 2016 Posted December 14, 2016 On newer builds, Edge is the default, however I remove any direct shortcuts to it. I predetermine IE/Chrome shortcuts on redirected Desktops. Edge is used for PDFs and that's about it. It still lacks some GPOs which have otherwise been available with IE for years. Not sure if the issue of Edge importing Favourites from a redirected location is still an issue for example?
Badaz52 Posted December 15, 2016 Author Posted December 15, 2016 How have you all managed to turn off the welcome page popping up everytime in edge? I managed to turn it off in the registry along with enabling the home button and specifying a home page but it isn't working for me anymore and I have no idea why. I've not changed anything it just refuses to add the registry keys on login.
MartinT Posted December 23, 2016 Posted December 23, 2016 Using Edge as the default here. I will install Chrome for those who need it but there are fewer reasons to do so these days. Edge has become pretty reliable and remains fast. I invoke our VLE (Firefly) for any new instance which disposes of the MSN crap that otherwise starts.
mlunn82 Posted January 11, 2017 Posted January 11, 2017 I know this is an old thread but i have been looking to change edge from default to chrome but had no susses so far. Had left edge as default as everything seemed to work expect when the children go to use Espresso which wont work on edge. I have been on the phone to espresso for most of the morning and they say that it will not work with Edge. Any tips or ideas as no GPO i try seems to want to make IE or Chrome default on windows 10. Thanks

Thanks In the end I found that editing and replacing C:\Windows\System32\OEMDefaultAssociations.xml worked. Use the gpo setting to replace files. So for example for the .htm line you would put ProgId="ChromeHTML" ApplicationName="Google Chrome" OverwriteIfProgIdIs="ChromeHTML" Do the same for .html .url .http .https I also changed .pdf to ProgId="AcroExch.Document.DC" ApplicationName="Adobe Acrobat Reader DC" as Edge changed itself to the default .pdf reader. Hope that helps! 1
mlunn82 Posted January 11, 2017 Posted January 11, 2017 Hi Thimon, Thanks for the reply will give that ago. Being lazy here You haven't got a copy of the GPO and file that i could try on a test machine :-) In the end I found that editing and replacing C:\Windows\System32\OEMDefaultAssociations.xml worked. mlunn82 Posted January 11, 2017 Posted January 11, 2017 Thanks Thimon your a Star. Will give them a go. Also trailing the online version of espresso now as that seems to work with edge. Thanks
Michael Posted January 11, 2017 Posted January 11, 2017 I've had nothing but trouble with Edge (as of late), but only with interactive type PDFs - Chrome was one solution, but this caused issues for some users too. I used the following to control Explorer file associations (via GPO) and it works a treat: 1
Michael Posted January 12, 2017 Posted January 12, 2017 On a related note (to the above), I've added associations for http, https, htm and html so they open in Chrome. This works for links (within Explorer), but if a user clicks a Hyperlink in Word, it still prompts the user. Any idea what I need to add to stop it prompting the end user so they open in Chrome automatically? Thank you!
