Advice on moving to O365

I want to try to move some of our things to O365 and want to ask for some advice on some things. These things would be forms and i'd be wanting to look at workflow too as some of our things do get missed, with the view to move emails over to O365.

 

1. We already have an O365 setup however this is only for students with an @students.domain.co.uk domain and im wanting to set a whole school O365 just with @DomAin.co.uk with the view to bring students over and get rid of @students.domain.co.uk. Is it possible for us to have 2 O365 setups? Do i need to pay MS more money for this?

 

2. We still have onsite exchange. Am i right in thinking that staff can still use O365 without me needing to port the mailboxes over. This is something i would like to do in the future but at the moment, im not yet ready to do. Will Staff will still be able to look into O365 with their email address as i will have SSO sync from AD to O365 setup just like i do with students.

 

If i've got any more questions/thoughts, ill post them up.

As to part one 1 you could probably do what you're after just by using email aliases, we had something similar originally with our students on @schoolname.onmicrosoft.com (which is still listed an alias for all students), but swapped the primary email/username to use our @schoolname.org.uk domain. It should just be a case of having both as aliases and then changing the "primary email"

You definitely don't need a second 365 setup.

If I were you, I'd keep the @students.etc domain. The main advantage would be that if a student sent an abusive or otherwise unsuitable email to someone, it would be blindingly obvious that's it's come from a student. They also wouldn't be able to claim to be a member of staff if they had @student in their email address. A single Office 365 tenant can handle multiple domains very happily, you could bring staff into your existing one without having to have multiple tenants.

 

I'm not sure what you're driving at with 2. Are you asking if teachers can use the rest of O365 without using its email? If so, yes. However, if you do unify your email domain you'll have to configure your Exchange/O365 as a hybrid deployment until you migrate your staff mailboxes across. Setting it up as a hybrid would probably be the easiest way to port staff mailboxes anyway so it's probably worth doing.

As above I would not create a 2nd Office 365 tenant but have all the domains you want verified within a single Office 365 login plus if in the future you want to start using things like Microsoft Classroom or OneNote for Classroom its easier when the teachers and students are in the same tenant when setting up classes etc
