Also I've seen the idea of a reverse advent calendar, where you put an item in a box each day and then donate it to a food bank before Christmas... nice idea, but just thinking about it... wouldn't you just buy the 25 things all in one go anyways?

We did something like this last year but did it on the 12 days of Christmas and did it as an accumulation of things to donate. So on Day 1 we put 1 item into a box, by day 12 we were putting 12 items into the box (varied in cost and some could be as simple as a couple of tins of potatoes at 15p each). Was nice going to the food bank to donate it :-)

It’s time again for one of my favorite holiday traditions: the ninth annual Hubble Space Telescope Advent Calendar. Every day until Sunday, December 25, this page will present one new image of our universe from NASA's Hubble telescope...

1. The Antennae galaxies, viewed in the sharpest-yet image of this merging pair of galaxies. During the course of their collision, billions of stars will be formed. The two spiral galaxies, about 45 million light-years from our solar system, started to interact a few hundred million years ago, making the Antennae galaxies one of the nearest and youngest examples of a pair of colliding galaxies. Nearly half of the faint objects in the Antennae image are young clusters containing tens of thousands of stars. The orange blobs are the two cores of the original galaxies and consist mainly of old stars criss-crossed by filaments of dust, which appears brown in the image. The two galaxies are dotted with brilliant blue star-forming regions surrounded by glowing hydrogen gas, appearing in the image in pink.

Link: QEMU Advent Calendar 2016

The QEMU Advent Calendar 2016 features a QEMU disk image each day of December until Christmas. Each day a new package becomes available for download.

Every download contains a little 'run' shell script that starts the QEMU emulator with the recommended parameters for the disk image. Disk images are either contained directly in the download or are downloaded by the 'run' script (you need to have installed 'curl' or 'wget' in that case).

The disk images contain interesting operating systems and software that run under the QEMU emulator. Some of them are well-known or not-so-well-known operating systems, old and new, others are custom demos and neat algorithms.

The 'run' scripts (and disk images if included in the download) were created by volunteers from the QEMU community to showcase cool software that QEMU can run.

We're actually doing the reverse advent calendar in our house (there's 5 of us, Me, the wife, 17 yo, 14 yo & 3 yo) so we've each written our names down on pieces of paper (5 each) and we draw one each day and when you are drawn it is your job to go and get something to put into the box to be donated to the food bank. Even the teenagers seem to have quite embraced it and are taking it quite seriously :-)
