NEED SOME HELP urgently FILE PERMISSIONS DISASTER RECOVERY

Hi All

 

I had a complete server failure this morning MIS and admin data

 

got sims up and running

 

but when recovering my admin documents from my nas box

 

all the files are read only and I can not change the attribute from right click properties

 

can anyone shed some light on my this is.

 

server 2012

 

must be ntfs permissions or something

 

quite desperate to get this up and running

How were they backed up? What software did you use?

sounds like you need to force a "take ownership" move them to your restored area and then apply the correct permissions from there.

I think I need to take ownership as administrator

ok where is the take ownership button on server 2012 Face palm

right click on the folder > Properties > Security > Advanced

window opens and shows you current permissions and owner, should link to Change in blue.

 

set owner to local / domain administrator (you preference) apply close and reopen window and you should now be able to view and set permissions as required.

I have done this but the read only permission still is set it will not change

Can you write to the drive? if it's a SSD it could be that it has failed and switched to a read only state for the entire drive to protect the data.

No its a hyper v running on sas drives

I can't understand why this is happening I am the owner yet all files are read only.

 

This is basic stuff but my head is mashed.

I have a feeling the share permissions might be the issue

Everyone is set to read.

 

If I change to write this may be my issue.

 

Do share permissions take over file permissions.

Well it two different things.

Share permissions only apply f accessing the files via a share, rather than directly on the server they are stored.

Need to walk away and have a fresh look in the morning.

After you took ownership, did you then change the permissions on the files so that you have full control or modify rights?

Also make sure that the permissions in the folder you are copying them to do not propagate down to it's children.

Share permissisions for eveyone was set to read. The most restrictive permission takes priority.

 

Even if ntfs permissions say read write. Wood for trees.

It's happened to the best of us. Like when I managed to deny admin rights to my Domain Admin account. I was so tired. I made a stupid mistake. Fortunately I was able to fix it with the master Admin account, but it took me too long to work out what to do.

but I am glad that I am a triple backup guy

 

backup the vm

mirror copy the data

incremental the data

 

overkill I know but the one time you don't it will bite you in the backside
