Stuart-Hannah Posted November 11, 2016 Posted November 11, 2016 I am looking to put together a survey to understand where staff are up to with regards to their understanding of ICT. What sort of things would you ask? Stuart
Cazale Posted November 11, 2016 Posted November 11, 2016 Have you tried switching it off and on again? 1
hardtailstar Posted November 11, 2016 Posted November 11, 2016 Have you tried switching it off and on again? Ive found in the past that these sorts of surveys are best related to what you have in the school. So like 'Can you connect to the projector' etc
GuyJD Posted November 11, 2016 Posted November 11, 2016 I normally ask them what the big black box under their monitor is called, if they call it the Hard Drive that tells be everything I need to know about their understanding of ICT. 1

I've seen a poster up in a school (a "professional" poster, designed and printed by an education body) that had a big arrow pointing at a tower, labelled "Hard Drive". 1
bossman Posted November 11, 2016 Posted November 11, 2016 @Stuart-Hannah Don't do it! Unless you expect proper answers and not just a moan about how bad the IT is, no matter how good you think it is Staff are never satisfied, this will open up a can of worms and could undermine your take on the IT systems. I used to measure our Staff based upon survey's just like this and found them really wanting as they all thought they were based on a score of 0-10 at least an 8 across the board. Now you know and I know that when you go into details about what they actually know about IT it suddenly drops to around a 3-5 mark which is quite progressive in real terms. If you feel your end users (Staff) are really good i.e. Can code and create SQL statements and embed Macros in excel spreadsheets etc etc then they will be approaching a 5 maybe a 6 in real terms. As @hardtailstar has suggested, keep it to what you have in the school and keep it short. Good Luck
DalekSec Posted November 11, 2016 Posted November 11, 2016 What does IT stand for? How do you duplicated screens? Whats the square root of pi devided by the amount of RAM in kbs in your PC?
speckytecky Posted November 11, 2016 Posted November 11, 2016 (edited) Called in a few months ago because a student misbehaved and broke a number of computers. When I got there it was actually a number of broken monitors. Another fine example more recently, I'd removed drums and cartridges from a printer in a staff member's office which they weren't in at the time to test them in another printer that had a faulty drum unit. Whilst I was testing IO had a call from the said member of staff querying why the printer (with the wide open toner / drum drawer) wouldn't print:D I'm constantly amazed by the lack of IT awareness and understanding by most staff on basic IT issues and indeed regularly used programmes such as MS Word and Excel. as to any chance of them delving into the fruit basket of value added components things like O365 brings to their tools basket then I realise that, that's just not going to happen. To find a member of teaching staff who has even 30% knowledge of these things is a very, rare gem; in my very humble opinion. I'm astonished that they haven't pick up a better skillset through their use of the kit. Edited November 11, 2016 by speckytecky 1
CAWJames Posted November 12, 2016 Posted November 12, 2016 We have been using LimeSurvey for years now, we create a survey and link it on the VLE, then see no one fill it in lol
Stuart-Hannah Posted November 15, 2016 Author Posted November 15, 2016 Thanks everyone, had a few days to think about this... survey not happening as I know it won't get completed. 1
