"Gaming" Monitors - Are they worth it and do they make any difference over others?

Hi all,

 

I was wondering if anyone could shed some light on the whole "Gaming" monitors thing. I use my home PC mainly for gaming in my spare time, as you can see from the Specs in my sig, I've got it to a relatively nice spec.

 

With Xmas deals more than likely on the way, I wondered if it was time to look at 2 new monitors. They are probably the only thing I haven't upgraded... I only intend to play at 1080p and currently have 2 1080p IPS monitors @ 5ms response times.

 

So I was wondering if monitors they brand as gaming monitors would actually make any noticeable difference to my experience? I'm not looking to break the bank and go buy 2 ROG screens. I have my eye on an ASUS VS248HR which has a 1ms response time and a better contrast ratio then my current monitors (I think).

So would I notice any difference if I was to replace my current screens with 2 of the above? Or is it just a fad to try and pull you in??

Immediate improvement of response time, 5ms down to 1ms is a lot! whether that will be noticeable to you or not, I'm not sure.. (I didn't notice an improvement in fading/ghosting when I upgraded mine) Edited November 10, 2016 by Arreks

imo i would rather go with an Ultrawide monitor, most new games support 2560 x 1080+

 

And it looks SOOOO much better than your bog standard 1920x1080,

 

I had a 32" monitor (can't remember tech specs) but was 1920 x 1080 and moved down to a 2560 x 1080 28"? (i think) and i prefer it by a country mile!

You may find the greatest benefit comes from getting an adaptive sync monitor - G-Sync in your case (though this carries a price premium over Freesync). It's supposed to make a big difference in smoothness, especially considering how hardware requirements for decent quality settings are ramping up so quickly.

Nice idea, but I'd miss my second monitor waaaaay to much! I don't think I could do without a second screen!

That's fair enough, i use my old 32" as my second screen when i need it but i don't think it's been switched on in months!

 

The way my room is led out the monitors arn't next to each other and i can't make room for 2 monitors together

That being said I suppose one of those AOC G-Sync monitors only comes out slightly more than replacing both of my current monitors. As I wouldn't need 2 G-Sync monitors I could just use an original one as my 2nd screen....

I actually replaced my dual monitor setup (24" + 20") with a single 34" ultrawide (3440x1440) and wouldn't go back. I really like it for productivity (as you can easily tile 2 programs side by side at a resolution of 1720x1400 each), movies and gaming. My 24" monitor was a 120Hz model and I never really felt it made much difference compared to a 60hz one. In fact in a lot of ways the 120hz one was inferior as it only had a TN panel which meant the colour reproduction was noticeably worse than my other IPS panel.

 

Run away from anything that advertises itself as 'gaming' specific IMO! If you want a new monitor I'd pay more attention to making sure it has a 1440p/4k resolution and uses an IPS/PLS panel before you start worrying about the refresh rate
