Joanne Posted November 10, 2016 Posted November 10, 2016 OK so all of our staff laptops are the same. We have clevertouch boards which are connected to through HDMI. We are running Windows 10. When I go into sound options, the board isn't available as a device. Staff will plug in the laptop and it will only play sound through the laptop unless they reboot. As much as I tell people to shut down, plug in, start up, they just don't get it. So a reboot fixes and sometimes uninstalling and re-installing the Realtek driver fixes it. Does anyone else have this issue? Graphics and Sound drivers are all up to date (via microsoft update). I get 2-3 calls about this a day and people can't accept that rebooting is the solution. Another weird one I've had is that it worked fine in the morning and then it suddenly stopped working and played out of the laptop. Bizzare. HALP!
Patrick Posted November 10, 2016 Posted November 10, 2016 What happens if you use the default audio driver instead of the realtek one? Also, the HDMI audio driver comes from the Intel display driver, is that up to date from Intel and not windows update? 1
mowgli82 Posted November 10, 2016 Posted November 10, 2016 ^^ This. My intel driver was out of date on some Fujitsu boxes that caused this issue. 1
Joanne Posted November 10, 2016 Author Posted November 10, 2016 Interesting, because I always thought it was the Realtek with the way I refreshed that one and then it would connect. There is an intel one. I'll check then! Thanks. It's a right ol' pain.
Patrick Posted November 10, 2016 Posted November 10, 2016 It's because the HDMI comes from the graphics processor, which also handles the audio for HDMI output, so the Intel display driver installs an HMDI audio driver as well. It's possible that the realtek driver is not playing well with intel. 1
sted Posted November 10, 2016 Posted November 10, 2016 my intel nuc at home does this sometimes if i switch av sources or turn it on before the amp (its plugged into the amp amp to tv) and i have to go to audio properties and change the default format setting see image before it will output sound again even if i reboot (it never did this on 8.1 drivers are as new as it thinks it can get)
Joanne Posted November 21, 2016 Author Posted November 21, 2016 SO this morning I fix the problem on a machine. Reboot. Works fine. A few hours later (laptop has not been moved) and it stops working and goes through the laptop again... WHY?!?!?
Joanne Posted December 6, 2016 Author Posted December 6, 2016 Yesterday I had the issue. I disabled the Realtek card, updated drivers on Intel, checked the sound with the volume bar and left. 30 minutes later, no sound. Went and looked and videos in Chrome did not have sound. Re-enabled Realtek card, then sound came through laptop. Went to sound options, set screen as default and then all was fine. How is this working? I've disabled the Realtek driver on another laptop (same model) and the sound came through just fine. WHAT IS GOING ON???

WHAT IS GOING ON??? its win 10 (it never did this on 8.1 same machine) and detecting what output it can do (it sucks at it for some reason) just change the default audio format to usually a higher (in my experience) setting and the sound is back
Joanne Posted December 6, 2016 Author Posted December 6, 2016 default audio format.... will that be in sound options in settings?
sted Posted December 6, 2016 Posted December 6, 2016 default audio format.... will that be in sound options in settings? right click the speaker icon playback devices double click whatevers there and advanced at home on the nuc that does it ive found the one that works best is the 2nd one from the bottom but its a bit of trial and error (bottom one works until i try to watch youtube at 1.5/2x speed with sound) 1
Joanne Posted October 13, 2017 Author Posted October 13, 2017 This is rearing its ugly head again. Except a reboot doesn't fix it. It's like after a certain amount of sound inactivity, the screen sounds gets disabled or something... like when my amp at home hasn't played a sound for 30 mins, it switches off.
WorksOnMyPC Posted October 11, 2018 Posted October 11, 2018 Sorry to resurrect a old thread. Did you ever get to the bottom of this? Im having the exact same issue with quite a few boards and pcs.
Joanne Posted October 16, 2018 Author Posted October 16, 2018 unfortunately not. I have to uninstall the "High Definition Audio Device" and scan for new hardware. It re-installs and then outputs onto HDMI. Using different laptops has helped.
ecuatorial Posted November 9, 2021 Posted November 9, 2021 Updating the Intel Iris Xe graphics driver through Dell site (not Windows update as that didn't know of new driver) seems to have worked for us. The dock can now be plugged in and unplugged while laptop is switched on and it recognises the speakers. Hope this can help those moving to teacher laptops Will update if any issues.
