Ipad management for cared for children

excuse me if this is in wrong place.

 

The school have been asked to purchase a couple of ipads on behalf of some "cared for" children. They will be using the ipads both in school and at their home.

What would be the best way to go forward with this? They're not the schools property so I didn't think I should use Meraki like I do with the schools ipads. But I think they are going to need some kind of restrictions setting up. I was hoping someone else had had to deal with this situation and would be willing to share their experiences please.

Who owns them?

 

If you are responsible for management of them regardless of ownership, I'd set the same restrictions as all the other students, if they don't like this for whatever reason, I'd make them sign a little waiver saying the school is not responsible if the child stumbles across any material they shouldn't.

 

As far as I'm concerned, if I am ever asked to manage anything, safeguarding is always a number 1 priority, no exceptions.

As above, I have setup iPads in a very similar situation to yours and they received exactly the same restrictions as the student ones and were also enrolled in our MDM. I would also be tempted to enable find my iPad using an Apple ID you have control of so that if somehow someone manages to restore the device it cannot be activated for use by anyone else.

MDM is designed for BYOD so restricting non-school owned devices or just installing apps paid for by the school can work well. If not school owned you may not want to "Supervise" them as this gives you even more options to lock them down.

 

Find my iPad is also really useful if there is risk of them being stolen etc.

 

So MDM is not all or nothing there are many different levels of control you can implement.

We've had to tailor iPads for LAC but we purchased them so we treated them as "school owned iPads", supervised them and used MDM - as well as using other native iPad options for restricting specific websites (in one case we were asked to prevent any access to social networking sites). We gave advice regarding filtering of internet to carers, as we do not use the external publishing option of Lightspeed MDM. Two of the students have now left us - aged 16. With their carers' agreement the device management and supervision was removed and the iPads returned to them "out of the box". The only issue we've had in the last 2 years was regarding internet filtering in the home, which was resolved between the carers and their ISP.
