Slow log ons

Hi,

 

We have an issue on are network where random PC's take forever to log on.

 

We could have a room of 26 PC's and 24/26 could get to CTRL + ALT +DEL screen in like 40 seconds the other 2 would take 10 - 15 mins. Then be fine the next time and 2 other ones be affected.

 

This goes on throughout the whole network causing random items like this. I've checked the GPO to see if it is that but even when there is only the default policy in place random PC's still do this, leading me to believe it is not GPO related. Also we have Verbose logging enabled it gets stuck in random places through out - sometimes applying file policy some times applying computer policy.

 

We have 2 DC's and i've checked the issue occurs on both when used as a long on server.

 

Any ideas?

I would have a look at DNS. Start at the clients that are being slow and check the IP settings and make sure they are pointing at the right DNS server. You could have a rogue dhcp server handing out dodgy IP's.

I did already have a look at this as well. From my knowledge of DNS it seems to be fine.

 

It is pointing to the IP's of the 2 DC's we have with the DNS installed.

Agreed. Are the clients Windows 7? Often find it would take a good few mins at applying group policy files policy if a machine wasn't shut down correctly, although no where near 10 mins.

Have you checked the affected client event log? May be a time out or error trying to access something.

Anything happening at startup i.e. AV scans

 

Try startup in Safe Mode with Networking, or disable all but essential Microsoft Services.

 

I had an issue a few years back where PC's were taking 30mins to get to CTRL ALT DEL and this turned out to be some rogue startup items by unnecessary applications.

 

Enable Verbose logging to see where it is hanging and/or check event logs.

I think it sounds a bit DNS-like. Can you change dhcp to eliminate one of the dns servers and then the other?

If you're sure DNS is correct it's worth checking event logs for group policy settings being applied. Group policy gives up after 15 mins if it can't apply it's settings. Edited November 2, 2016 by RLR
