Huxy Posted October 19, 2016 Posted October 19, 2016 Just purchased a Dell Optiplex 3040 which only has HDMI and a Display Port. When the HDMI is connected to a HDMI splitter (one output to the teachers projector, the other output to the teachers first monitor) and the display port to the second monitor (desktop extended across both screens) for some reason the 3.5mm audio output at the rear does not work. I know that HDMI streams audio as well but surely when something is plugged into the 3.5mm audio jack the sound should bypass through this rather than the HDMI. Otherwise what is the point in supplying the computer with HDMI and an external audio. Any ideas?
snagrat Posted October 19, 2016 Posted October 19, 2016 They will be two difference playback devices so if Windows is configured to use HDMI the 3.5mm playback (probably Realtek) won't output.
Huxy Posted October 19, 2016 Author Posted October 19, 2016 Thanks for your reply. Strage why the computer only comes with HDMI, Display Port and the 3.5mm jack.
3s-gtech Posted October 19, 2016 Posted October 19, 2016 Are you sure the driver is installed for the onboard (analogue) audio? It won't necessarily show as a missing driver in device manager, you need to try the Dell audio drivers for the device. Also check the playback device list (under Sound).
Huxy Posted October 19, 2016 Author Posted October 19, 2016 Thanks I will take a look first thing in the morning and let you know. Cheers.
Huxy Posted October 24, 2016 Author Posted October 24, 2016 The on-board sound card takes care of all of this. If you right hand click on the speaker icon on the right hand side next to the clock, click on 'Playback DEvices' and then select the speakers the sound is split from the HDMI to the speakers via the 3.5mm phono jack.
